Good Honda Oil Filter Wrench

Something doesn't seem right. I only hand tighten my filters and have never had a problem with them leaking. In fact, I've learned over the years that I can tighten them even less than I've been and they won't leak AND are not so hard to get off at oil change time. Basically, I screw down til the gasket makes contact, then go another 1/5 turn.

You might check and clean the mating surface. Maybe a bit of old gasket is sticking and causing it to not seal properly.

Also, I try to use Fram Endurance filters because of the grippy surface (among other reasons). I almost never need any help removing the filters by hand.
Agreed, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have an overtightened situation from quick lube or dealer. The struggle is real.

I have been hand tightening filters since the late 80s and only once had one leak (a blue PureOne about 8 years ago). A twist strap wrench, like the one below, made it a little tighter and the leak stopped. After I removed the filter I noticed a small imperfection on the seal that likely contributed to the leak.

This type of strap wrench may be useful if you can't get your hand in there:

Strap wrenches are terrible and not the solution to this problem.

If you bounce around oil filter brands you may have a box full of cap wrenches, you would thing they should be all the same but they can be very different. Stick with one brand and go to the parts store and find one that fits nice and snug or by a set like D60 posted a few days ago.
I was surprised when I put the Carquest premium filter on my Corvette a few weeks ago when none of my filter cap wrenches would fit on it. With that car the filter is in a tight spot that doesn’t allow me to tighten it very well by hand so I usually give it a little bit more of a turn with the filter wrenches. I’m going to need to find a new filter cap wrench that fits for when it comes time to take it off. I have a whole series of cap wrenches that have served me well for all of my different cars over the last 15-20 years so I was shocked to find a filter that those cap wrenches won’t fit 🫤

They aren't great but when you dont have anything else that fits, you gotta have one! And they don't damage the filter, if you are in that rare situation where "hand tight" is not enough.

Right, but can these be used for home plumbing?
No idea, I don't do much plumbing but for occasional job I use either a Swedish pipe wrench or Knipex Cobra's, both are far better than regular Channellocks. The oil filter pliers do a good job removing filters though, they were designed for that.

I know that feeling. I have about 4 cups for one engine with the infamous ring of fire the filer sits up inside of, getting it off is easy but you don't want to put your hands up there to tighten it, it is hotter than Hades and the cat covers are sharp as razor blades. For the JDM OE filter only the one hard to find and $$ aluminum cup one from Beta fits properly even though all are technically supposed to be the same size.

It's about the only thing Fram filters get right, wish more manufacturers put the non slip coating on the outside.

I have probably 6-7 cap wrenches between the cars over the years. I also have a couple of the old school metal band in different sizes. Rubber strap ones in different sizes. I also bought that 3 finger version when listed in the sale thread a couple months back and have needed that for some of the Fram ones as the grip stuff slipped with the cap, maybe I need a new cap. I have the factory Honda one listed as well as the one for the S2000 as I use those on my Pilot for now until stock is exhausted.

I used my Husky Digital calipers to find the MM of some of my filters and then ordered the correct size cap. Shockingly the factory Honda cap seems to fit most of my Honda filters well. The Frams are a different size.

From DriveAccord is basically 3/4 after gasket touches, with a lubricated gasket. The S2000 filters have metal on both sides of the gasket that is supposed to make contact to keep from vibrating off. That needs the extra turn with cap wrench.

It's interesting that Honda adds those marks to the filters. Do they think the average person is incapable of figuring out when am "unmarked" filter reaches 3/4 turn past the point where the seal makes contact? :ROFLMAO:

I think the average person is incapable of figuring out when am "unmarked" filter reaches 3/4 turn past the point where the seal makes contact.

My experience removing filters other people put on supports my conclusion.

That is certainly the case here in 'murica. Possibly elsewhere, too.

I’ve never had one leak tightening until it won’t turn with one hand until now. I have a New Holland TZ25DA compact tractor that has 3 filters, engine oil, power steering, and transmission suction filter. The power steering filter is tucked inside the frame under the operator platform. I replaced the trans and steering filters after changing trans fluid. The steering filter started leaking, I tightened it up and was ok. I did some hard loader work and it started leaking again. I replaced the filter and it sealed up. I never did figure out why it loosened up twice. The new one is ok. I didn’t see any defects in the gasket or sealing surface on the old filter or the filter mount.
