gsnod, in the U.S. this oil Esso/Exxon oil is called XD3elite according to my Esso tech info here in Canada. You cant get this XD3 syn oil down there, too bad.

ELoZE'PGT, here Sask Esso Bulk stations are running the sale, Greaser makes a great point, one I overlooked, the Petro-Canada XD3 5w30 conventional is not SL or SJ rated, it is SH, the 10-30 is SL, the 10-30 has a .8 higher visc rate than 5-30 is only real dif I see along with -3C less visc rate at 100C on 10w30 conventional, with spring around corner this wont matter, right. I would go with 10-30 for the SL rating, Greaser caught that detail, thanks Greaser.

Greaser,

I got a scare because my spec sheet says same thing you say, I checked my 05 X-Trail manual, I am safe with an API SH oil, lucky.

But, I went and grabbed a new bottle of this 5-30 XD3 dino from my flat of 12 litres and read the API rating on the XD3 5w30 conventional bottle.

Reads on bottle as:

Recomendations for applications requiring:
API CF,CD/SL,SH,SG,CATERPILLAR TO-2, VICKERS 35VQ25, ALLISON C4.

Notice the CD/SL rating? This is on the bottle on API rating, I think Esso's spec sheet may be wrong or outdated? This 5-30 may work for you if the bottle labling is right and spec sheet wrong? It appears SL, I go with bottling, I cant see how Esso can misprint a bottle lable, if this lable on bottle is a mistake it could cost them millions in liable, right?

Called Esso tech line this morning, According to tech the Petro-Canada XD3 5w30 conventional is still SH on his specs, he stated the 5-30 was designed purposely as SH for oil volitile reasons. He is going to confer with oil engineers at Esso on what rating this oil is. He was suprised with the API SL rating on bottle of 5-30 XD3, he will find out for me & call me today or within 2 more days, I will post his finding in this thread when I get the info.

I expected a two day wait for answer on SH rating from Esso so I posted this morning. Got answer just now.

Petro-Canada XD3 5w30 conventional is SH, the lable on bottle is wrong, it does say SL on lable, Esso is now scurrying to remove SL from the lables on 5w30 conventional XD3. I think there was a little excitement at Esso today on this rating issue

Thanks for pointing out this SH rating Greaser, I am okay with Nissan on using SH, but not happy with SH, thought I had SL, I missed that on spec sheet, but time to put the 0-30 CI-4/SL XD3. (I wonder if SH rather than SL helps these stubborn Nissans to seat in a bit?)

Also, would the CF diesel add pack make up for loss on SH rating down from SL on gas rating?

I have used several different oils in my 93 Sentra...this car does not seem to like synthetic!...It developed 2 separate leaks, one of which disappeared after I went back to Exxon Superflo dino, 5-30, with a splash of Mobil 1 5w30( I was a bartender once , maybe that answers why the splash)....I think Superflo is an underrated oil, with a good flash point and one of the lowest ASH contents out there!.....I am not a big fan of Pennzoil, except for the 5-20, which seems to have good specs.

Can't tell you about the CF making up the difference in additives for the SH rating...have to do a search on the ratings to see why they were updated for different years. If your owners manual says a SH oil can be used in a pinch then you are good...this is a big liability issue for Esso if this ever gets out to the "mainstream" engine public
