Best oil weight for Merc GLS450 (M276) in Colorado

Only, only thing you need to make sure is that oil has MB229.5. Whether oil is 0W30, 5W30, 5W40 or 0W40, is irrelevant.
There are several oils that are kind of go to.
1. M1 0W40, cheap, readily available in Wal Mart, excellent oil. I tracked my BMW at HPR east of Denver with it, and seen A LOT of skiing time. Cannot go wrong! I put it in a friend's ML550 and another friend's Buick 3.6.
2. My favorite, but bit more expensive on Amazon, Castrol Edge 0W30. It is their premiere product. $49 for 6qt.
3. Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40 is another good choice. Readily available in AAP or AZ for $37 plus filter.
4. Motul X-Cess 5W40. Excellent oil, but only online.
5. AZ and AAP carry Mobil1 5W30 FS that has MB229.5. Interesting oil. Not worth it IMO compared to 0W40, but should be more shear stable.
6. Castrol Edge 5W30/40 is available in Wal Mart, but IMO step down from oils above.
Great list, thanks! I am definitely sold on M1 0W40, but a few of these others are intriguing.
Shear stability is something I may dive into, but I am inclined to trust the advice here.

Oh so you truly just bought this thing and don't even have it yet. The "just bought" thing usually pops up on here 1-4 weeks or so after it's driven and maintenance jumps on the mind. I've checked consumption on new to me vehicles after 1 tank full. I saw my level go down by a quarter in an old 95 Silverado after almost 370 miles or one tank so I knew I'd have to keep a quart in the back.
Yeah lol. Maintenance is always on my mind :) I'll probably drive with a quart in the back and check the oil weekly til I know what I am dealing with.
I know.
But then again, it is SOPUS, their PDS were always super accurate (no one said ever).
Good conversation there, though I must admit it's beyond my grasp of things currently.

Get M1 0W40 and enjoy skiing.

Owner of a late Merc GLC300 4Matic, I checked the oil specs to comply with warranty and have been running M1 ESP 0W-30 from the first oil change here in Michigan. 5 quart containers readily available at Walmart for around $27. Spec for mine is 229.52 and 72. My Merc specs include a second number. Not sure, but believe it is associated with catalytic convert filter (along with ESP), to avoid clogging. If it's the same spec as your GLS450, Euro M1 0W40 may not comply. Others may be more knowledgeable on this.

GLS450 from those years doesn’t have GPF.
