can you provide a link showing this lead to gumming in your engine because of higher viscosity?.
 
The occasional Italian Tune Up wouldn't hurt. I think that it at least helps keep the rings moving in the lands. Make sure to decel while still in gear as that puts pressure on the rings.
 
Many GM 5.3l motors had the oil consumption problem due to the AFM. The rings would get coked up according to the many TSBs out on this issue. Running a syn oil such as M1 or PP did not prevent the problem.

What is AFM?

Never mind, I figured it out. It should have on bearing on prius, right?

This comment is likely the closest to the truth and it's quite possible under those type of running conditions no oil will prevent the issue.
Some may slow down the process but it's possible that ring gumming is inevitability under such a duty cycle.

Is there any way to stop the electric motor from engaging and running off just the engine. If it's possible maybe a weekly high load highway run could help prevent the gumming issue.

To me, it sounds contra-intuitive that lower piston temps cause oil coking. My experience with toyota oil consumption was the opposite: early 1ZZ-FE engine has too hot pistons causing oil deposits in ring groves. I understand synthetic oils helped some, but it was not 100% fix.

In the other hand, there is something different in this 1.5 L prius engine, as the non-Atkinson version in Yaris and other toyota cars has no problems with oil consumption whatsoever.
 
Oil choice is important and the M1/ Ultra suggestions here seem appropriate. But what about oil change interval? The current crop of Prius (did Toyota ever decide on the proper plural?) have a suggested 10,000 mile OCI if I recall correctly, which could contribute to the problem for some.

Your 2007 may have a different recommendation, but the combination of a quality full synthetic used year-round and a sensible OCI (maybe sooner than the manual suggests) is the best defense you have.

I do not know if this has any relation to the prius but was just to point out you can still have stuck or gummed up rings using syn oil.

It's well known in the industry the higher % vii in the formulation lead to gumming, varnish and stuck rings.
Come on, fanboys with your faux synthetics and propped up VI - your oil choice isn't ne plus ultra, not since the trisyn formula went bye bye years ago.

Wow, thanks for the replies guys!

The 2007 Prius calls for a 5,000 mile OCI. 2010+ Prius changed to 10,000 miles (different engine). Of course, the 5,000 OCI for my 2007 Prius was based on conventional oil. I change my oil at 7,500 miles and have had used oil analysis done on it. Of course, as you'd imagine, its in cherry condition with almost no wear metals and lots of TBN. When the oil gets changed at 7500 miles it is almost as clean as it went in - the car seems to be very easy on oil, and I havent had any problems with fuel dilution.

The engine runs probably 85% of the time. It does shut off at red lights and once you start moving it usually restarts. The RPM's are generally low, I am a lead foot so I do hammer it a few times a week to pass a slow-poke or merge onto the highway. But generally cruising at 45mph, the engine might be turning 1,000 rpms. So I can see that being a factor.

Some owners of the Prius have used synthetic all of the cars life and still get oil burning/coke up rings.

Ive been using M1 products with the Prius, but have no loyalty - I will use whatever synthetic is available at Wal-mart or I can buy Amsoil as a local dealer lives nearby. What I dont want to do, is use M1 with high VI and even though the used oil analysis turn out nice, the ring lands are gumming up over time vs. using PU or Amsoil signature that wouldnt do the same.

And to the person who said 1/4 qt per 3000 miles isnt anything to worry about, I agree. Its miniscule considering the Prius only takes 3.5 quarts in the sump. I dont want it to evolve from 1/4qt per 3,000 miles to 1qt every 1,000 miles like some Prius owners though.
I guess the new question is, knowing that M1 has viscosity improvers and those can increase gum/carbon on the rings, which oil has the least VI and has the most potential to keep the rings and lands the cleanest?

I'm only a fanboy of facts, ARCO. I'm surprised you didn't recommend an ATV oil or something.
 
So I wonder if the yaris is having these issues when using tgmo. Since the oil was formulated for Toyota engines I wonder if there's any plus' to using it over a different brand.
Just spitballing.

Have you posted the used oil analysis somewhere? Wear metals and TBN will not detect oil coking. The only clue I had when I did used oil analysis in my corolla prior to oil consumption was oil thickining out of grade at the end of OCI.

I agree with you. I would do MMO/kreen piston soak before each oil change until the consumption goes away.

Yaris has no problems with oil consumption whatsoever regardless of oil type. I posted that a few posts up.
 
You can spend a couple grand to rebuild your engine or add 1/4 quart per 3000 miles. Might equate to less than a hundred over the remaining life of the vehicle.Do the math. I doubt anything is wrong anyway.

The best option is neither. On a 3000 mile OCI, 1/4 quart is meaningless. And with the taxis, nothing was added unless it was 1/2 quart or more down. 1/4 quart in 3000 miles isn't an engine issue, it's an OCD issue.

Its not just the oil, fuel and driving habits play a part too.

Redline SI1, Shell fuel, long drives under heavy load to get it real hot, and Redline, Millers or Gulf Racing (All ester based with exceptional cleaning ability) changed on short intervals will keep your rings clean enough to eat off!
