Best oil for new Honda - 50,000 miles/yr

MC is a syn blend but a very good oil. I would easily use MC with a SuperTech Filter and be very happy.
Maybe I missed it, however, I have yet to see any UOAs that show SSO is still good to go much beyond 20,000 miles, regardless of filter type. Can you point me to a UOA or two that shows SSO is still robust enough to properly lubricate an engine after 35,000 miles?

Before Honda introduced the OLM I believe the schedule was 5,000 severe and 10,000 normal. At 1,000 miles per week, I would call that normal service. You could probably run MC 5W20 for 10K with a Pure One filter, change it yourself for a cost of about $400 over 200K. Hardly a fortune and you would only be changing it ever 10 weeks. Lots of options listed. Your choice.

Sorry is this is a stupid question, BUT .... Some recommended 0W20 oil. Should I be at all concerned about using 0W20 when the recommended oil is 5W20??

Look at the 10k Civic UOA with olde Havoline 5w-20. I'd also consider Mobil 1 0w-30. However, a marathon run of 20k on German Syntec 0w-30 would be incredible and probally people would chip-in and pay for your UOA of it.

I would recommend using Amsoil and changing it every 6 months, at least that's what I'd probably do. Good luck with your new Civic! If I could afford a new car right now, a new Civic Si would probably be what I'd get.
Oh, and as for the oil filter, use a nice top quality filter like a HAMP (if they make them for the '08 Civics), Purolator PureOne (easily available at places like Advance Auto Parts or Pep Boys), or an Amsoil EaO.

I've also got a new '08 Civic, and I'm probably going to put on about 20K per year, mostly freeway. I'm gonna follow Pablo's recipe with the OLM oil change interval. After the warranty period, I may stretch things out a bit.

5W20-0W20. No, only real difference is cold weather performance when starting a cold engine. At operating temps basically the same. Search around on the site there is lots of information about this subject.

The Si is a very nice car. For obvious reasons, I wanted to maximize my mpg.
My main parameters for the new car purchase were mileage and reliability. I know the Civic 4 cyl can't touch the TDI for mpg, but it should do pretty well on the highway. I might go back to the TDI or some diesel in a few years. I understand there will be a lot more diesels around in '09 or 2010.

Usually in my opinion a bypass filter is a total waste of $$$ on a gasoline engine but 50,000 miles per year it would be fun to see how one would work .If you were willing to waste the money. I don't sell or use Amsoil buy that is what I would run. "Amsoil's syn oil and full flow and single bypass if running your mileage".
PP 5W20 every 7500 to 10,000 will be fine. I have used this is a 4 cylinder Accord for 85K, no oil consumption at all, I use Puralator Pure One filter, changed with everyoil change

My TDI experience was a good one. I had an '01 Jetta TDI that I put 219,000 miles on with no real problems. Got 50 mpg most of the time too. I sold it in 2006.
Needed another car. TDI was top of my list, but they were not sold in '07 so the only one's around are used '05 and '06. Few and far between, in high demand. So I was faced with buying a used TDI for $19000 with 50k miles on it with no warranty and diesel at $3.50 OR ........... a brand new '08 Civic, with full factory warranty, choice of color and options for $1200 LESS than the used Jetta.
Needed another car. TDI was top of my list, but they were not sold in '07 so the only one's around are used '05 and '06. Few and far between, in high demand.
