Guys - Help me out here. I drive a lot of mostly highway miles for my work. I regularly put 50,000 miles a year on my car. My Jetta TDI did very well for me for 220,000 miles. It's gone now.

I have just bought a new '08 Honda Civic EX, 4dr, manual. I want to make it last 4 years and 200,000 (or longer). If I follow the recommended maintenance schedule, it will be in the shop ALL THE TIME and cost a fortune. I'm thinking of using a synthetic or synthetic blend and longer OCI. Please recommend an oil, oil filter, and OCI that will make the new Honda engine last and perform well but also work out well moneywise.

I've garnered a lot of info on this forum already. Great place. What do you think for my situation? Thanks in advance.

PP in whatever grade reccomended, 5w-20 I think.
Use a purolator Pure One filter
you should be able to go 10K OCI
Leave the factory fill in until your first scheduled OC.
Do a UOA to see if this is working for you and to get a reccomendation as to whether to can extend your drain intervals.

Doesnt your car have an oil life monitor? Just follow it. You wont be in the shop all that often.

For 10k mile drains - PP/M1

For 10k-20k mile drains - Amsoil 0w-20/M1 EP 5w-20.

I posted this same question on the CivicTalk board and was recommended Royal Purple oil and 3000 - 5000 OCI. THAT WON'T SAVE ME ANY MONEY!

I get 5 free oil changes from my dealer. I'll ask them to use synthetic, but I doubt they will for my freebies.

No, it is not just mileage. If you are doing highway miles, your oil life monitor should let you go well over 10,000 miles between changes.

Also, it is a waste of Royal Purple to change it out before 8,000 miles. It would probably be good for 13,000+ in a civic.

Certainly is.

I have a 2007 CR-V and my oil monitor just turned 40% at 7200 miles. I do a 120 mile round trip daily. It's mostly highway miles at 65-75 mph. I use a Napa Gold filter with M1. I prefer a full synthetic because of the number of miles between OCIs.

This is what I would do and go 15k. If you don't want to go with Amsoil then Mobil1EP would be my second choice. But Amsoil is the only oil I would run past 10k. I have a friend who has the same driving schedule and has run Amsoil 15k for years and over 300k in his trucks.

I swap posts with an individual on another board that has both a Jetta TDI and a Civic, and both cars accumulate nearly 50,000 miles per year. This individual has been running Mobil 1 0W-20 in his Civic and has UOAs that suggest that his 20,000 mile OCI is just about perfect. FWIW, he's been running 25,000 mile OCIs on his Jetta with Mobil 1 0W-40, and based upon his UOAs, he's thinking to bump the Jetta to a 30,000 mile OCI.

No. Though you seem like an ideal candidate for Amsoil and their longer OCI claims. After 9 months you won't have to worry the warranty requirements so you can go with longer OCI's. This is as long as you don't get the extended warranty. Wix oil filters seem to be well made and should hold up for the long haul. Or Amsoil's oil filters would be a good choice with their oil. Make sure the ADBV is silicon, not nitrile.

With that amount of HWY miles, it doesn't matter what the ADBV is made out of. There will be so few startup that any oil filter will do.

If you can catch the 99c PP after MIR like we do here, run out and grab by the case load and use your friends' and families' address for the rebates. Then use it for 10K OCI and will be set for a while.

For a super long OCI sure but for anything under 10 the nitrile/rubber has been proven fine.
