excuse the lowercase, my hand is broken. the shop that built the motor recomended using only conventional oil, no syn. they suggested rotella 15-40 for the break in and then 2 oil changes after that bc of the good additive pack it has. i was thinking valvoline vr1 10-30. what do you guys think?

You could use Rotella Syn 5W40 after the first oil change-it's a stout oil. Mobil 1 0W40 is another good choice.

The shop does not recommend syn oil because they want to sell you an engine sooner.;)

Break in on dino then use whatever oil you want. VR-1 is dino oil correct? If it was me I would run a syn oil regardless of what the shop said.

I agree 100% the shop builds engines and not oil.
I would run synthetic also from the start.
A 402 GM, Ford, Pontiac, Buick, Olds, Honda?
does it have a roller cam or flat tappet camshaft?
If you dont know for certain then I dont know what to tell you.
many many people buy built engines but really dont know how to maintain them.
Amsoil makes a 10w40 oil that is a High Performance oil with the proper additives for flat tappet engines.
I use this oil in my 351W with a solid lift cam and it works very well.
I will not change this oil for the life of the engine from previous experiences with this oil.

I have a 1966 Corvette with a totally rebuilt 427 L72 425 HP, a vintage 1966 block cast Feb 1966 ..engine was bored ,030 over /block decked in 1994 . have installed comp cam extreme energy hyd flat tappet cam 4 years ago & endlebrock alum heads 7 years ago.do my own mechanical work ....ocasionally run the 1/4 mile oldies day at new england dragway best et 13.3 @ 105 MPH ....... RPM is limited ( by me ) to 5700 RPM . broke engine in on conventional 10/30 dinosore oil , then Moble one 4 quarts 10/30 & two quarts 15 /40 ..6 total , when i did cam broke cam in with conventional oil & then went to moble one again... so my story is since 1995 synthetic oil no problems , good pump ability i driove my Corvette hard approx 2,000 miles a season & moble one has worked for me ....no leaking or or burning

Show me a 402 Honda and I'll eat a head gasket with no ketchup.

It's two punched Honda V6. One on the front and one on the back.

Sorta like a Citation with a Fiero back end.
