I too have heard that Ford recommends 5w30 for the same engines in other countrys that don't have the CAFE requirements.
I also think that if a 5w30 shears down to a 5w20 in a standard Ford F-150 engine, it's because of being run longer than it should have been in a OCI, or it's a lower quality oil.
Most 5W-30's shear down to a 5W-20 due to Viscosity Index Improver VII added to the oil. Shearing is not a bad thing because is does not effect engine wear. The whole idea that thicker oil protects better and the only reason why manufactures recommend 5W-20's is for CAFE credit needs to die. If you properly maintain your vehicle you will end up trading it in or selling it before your engine fails. I know of a 2004 F150 with over 150,000 with a 4.6 and runs like a top and nothing but 5W-20 has been used in the motor. There are many stories like this. I also know of many fleet F150's with the 4.6's that have ran forever on nothing but bulk 15W-40. So if I can save even 0.06% on gas using a 5W-20 and still get 200,000 miles or more out of my motor I will use it no problem. Remember if you are using a less viscous fluid your engine is working more effeciently and this will reduce wear. I recommend using the lighest oil you can use with out causing additional engine wear. With Ford 4.6's and 5.4's in F-150's you can use 5W-20 and not have to worry about a thing.
