I'd like to start puting a HM oil in my truck. 1998 Z71 5.7l with 174k... I'd say that would qualify as being HM. So what HM oil seems to get the most votes around here? I'd like to use the oil with the best additive pack, backed up with some UOA & VOA's.

I also considered using rotella 5w40. Does group3 oil have the cleaning properties of the real synthetics and start leaks?

I've been following the poster HM reports. It appears as though the most happy campers are Castrol HM users.

Why that is ... I have no idea!!

BTW... I am not employed/associated with Castrol. I work in the adult beverage industry & use different brands of oils in different vehicles that clutter

my driveway.

Just my 2 cents....

I have used Havoline HM 10W30 and Castrol HM 5W30 in my old Jeep truck. They both worked well (quiet, smooth and no burnoff). They are removing the Havoline HM from the shelves of AdvanceAuto today (literally), so it might be impossible to find soon.

I would suggest Castrol HM because it worked well in my application and you can find it very easily. I think their 5W30 is a good product. You won't be sorry!!

I've been using Valvoline Maxlife highmileage oil for about 15k miles. It seems to be doing a great job, my vote is for the maxlife.

Although not as "reputed" as Pennz/Castrol/Havoline/Chevr. HM oils, Mobil clean and Exxon HM oils have the special characteristic that they are not thicker than their regular oils of the same grade. This makes them very useful for winter use, imo.

I used/am using Mobil clean HM last this winter (going to change it out April/May) in the Tbird, and it performed very well...(easy starts/zero consumption; only after VERY bad short-trip abuse [5-10 min trips at least 5 times a day in campus, and grocery/work trips which are not more than 15 min each way] every day for ca.5k miles has the oil become dark in color, and I've noticed a wee bit of increased engine noise).

For summer I will only use an HM which is thicker than the regular grade.
