Best filter at walmart

just curious what the best filter commonly available at walmart one might choose for a 6k OCI with a synthetic oil.

a friend of mine is doing his own oil changes, and for the same money as he would pay at a quicky lube he has learned he can buy a full synthetic and get the benefit of the better oil for peace of mind. currently he is using M1, but will buy whatever synthetic he can find on sale. I think he is using a OCOD with the M1, because that's what they sold him and that is what was on sale.

i suggested that walmart has the best prices i have found on any synthetic if you buy it in the 5qt jugs -- which is all he needs. i suggested that if he is going to spend good money on good oil, he should buy a better filter and can easily do a 6k or more OCI.

being a one-stop shopper, which filter would you choose at walmart to go with your - pick your brand because they are all the same price - synthetic oil?

i know ours sells Puroilator, Fram, and Bosch for sure. but i don't know what grades they sell of each brand.

which ones should i tell him to look for?

If it were me I would get M1 and a Fram Ultra. But I am over the top, a Fram Tough Guard is up for the job.

I used to use purolator exclusivly, but not in the last 6 months due to the reported tears. I am running mobil 1 filters on everything. If i had to pick a filter a wal mart it would probably be the fram ultra.

A Motorcraft can withstand those miles, no problem and it's $4 at Walmart, at least the one I get (FL-400S) is $3.97

No doubt the Fram Ultra is the best filter available at Walmart or just about anywhere on the planet. It boasts 99%+ efficiency @ 20 microns, 80% efficiency @ 5 microns, and guaranteed for 15,000 mile intervals.

It is the only synthetic media filter on the market to use not 1 but 2 layers of media with the wire mesh. Other synthetic filters have the wire mesh but not the dual layers, which give it the high capacity and efficiency.

I may change my view in the future, but today it's about the only filter i will buy based on price/performance. They are about $9 at Walmart, i got mine on sale on Amazon for a little over $5 before they raised the price on the XG 3980.

What vehicle does he own ? Motorcraft filters (with the silicone anti drain back valve) are a good filter for the price and depending on the model of vehicle should handle 6k with ease.

For 6k, you'd probably be just fine with a Fram Tough Guard, but if price isn't a factor go for the Ultra. I like Mobil 1 oil filters also.

I'd say Fram TG. However, I'm sure a Motorcraft (if applicable) would get it done.

I know the price is ok at wal mart on the motorcraft filters but as far as i know they are still made by purolator so maybe their quality hit the ground also.
Purolator was a good filter at an ok price now even for free i would not use them its just not worth the risk. We used to use group 7 which is a purolater and we stopped using them a few months back for a better filter although we are changing to wix with the next order because the new filters say made in china and thats not what i want my customers to see even know they are quality filters.

Almost any filter will do 6K in a pretty clean engine. Guess the next question is does he want the best filtration efficiency? If he decides on an Ultra he could actually run it 2x 6,000 OCIs and be just fine since it's rated for 15K. The TG is good for 10K miles, and is almost as efficient as the Ultra. I'd probably go with AC Delco or Motorcraft next (if they carry the right one, pretty limited line) if shopping only at Walmart for an oil filter.

Hmm. The Only?
Here is an Amsoil Ea15K13 I opened last year.

How many layers do you see? I see 3. One fine mesh, one larger mesh and then the square wire backing.

Memphis I showed you the pics already in my last filter thread.

That being said I think the Fram Ultra is a great filter and have I them on both of my cars currently.

I've been very happy lately with the Fram Ultra. Ad for ~$8 , you can't really beat it. I know it is the latest trend to bash Purolator for all of this so-called torn media. Not saying it is hogwash, but I've yet to have a torn one, or any other issues with their filters. I still believe that they are a good filter at a good price. So go ahead and hang me now lol

But my opinion is that if you are going to spend a few extra $'s on synthetic oil, than what is the problem with spending a couple more on a top tier filter?

The best oil filters sold at Walmart are the Fram Ultra (most of them are $8.97, unless you need a cartridge filter), and the Bosch Distance Plus ($11.97)

I dont trust walmart as you could get a p1 in there . the people working there are mostly brain dead.

I buy my ultra from amazon it comes out to about 6 bucks shipped with their subscribe and save.

sorry, i forgot to mention the vehicle ... suppose that might make a difference.

it is a fairly new '12ish nissan Xterra. pretty sure it is the 3.0v6.

as to the reason for synthetic, it is just a matter of getting more for the same money. he probably would have bought a better filter had they known to sell him one. i asked him what he bought and he said "i dunno, i think its a fram"

he's not a car guy, and to be honest i'm surprised he does his own oil changes. but he's about the nicest guy i know and i'd like to steer him right. just can't see spending good money on good oil and cheaping out on the filter. and i think he'd "do it right" if someone told him what "right" was.

i've just always used motorcraft on my fords and acdelco on the wife's cavalier. never put much more thought into filters than that since the day i cut open my first OCOD. just went with OEM since that day.

It's hard to tell from the pictures and without seeing a Fram Ultra side by side i wouldn't be able to tell for sure the difference between the dual layer media and single layer media.

I will surely follow up with Amsoil and Fram to see what's what, but even if the Amsoil was the same as the Fram, the cost is higher, especially considering i stocked up at $5.30 / filter.

If i could get the Amsoil for the same price, i would stock up on them too, they are both very close in efficiency ratings.
