What filter do you recommend for a 2006 Silverado 1500 5.3L?

Approximately 145k miles.

The truck is new to my dad as he bought it in August of last year. He brought it by the house and I checked the oil and it had been freshly changed from the used lot he had bought it from. I picked up some 5W-30 full synthetic on sale recently and figured I would go ahead and change it for him as he’s not able to do it himself. The only filters I have any real experience with is Fram and AC Delco for this engine. Yesterday, my local Walmart only had Purolator and super tech brand filters in stock for this engine and I was hesitant to get either one of them because I don’t have any experience with which one is the better.

My dad lives way out in the country and spends more time on his ATV than he does in his truck. He only drives his truck, maybe three times a week if that. This will most likely be a year long OCI.

Carquest premium would be my choice. Can get them for 15-20% off using advance auto parts coupon code. Just need a minimum order of $35 or $100.

Other good options would be microgard select at O’Reillys and many of the STP XL at AutoZone as they are made by premium guard and currently at the top of the quality list

Unfortunately there is no AAP near me. The closest one is about 25 miles in the opposite direction. AutoZone/Oreillys/Walmart are what I have within a 5-7 mile drive.

A lot of miles have been put on these trucks with ACDelco filters (and likely many others). I've used PF61 (with or without the E) on mine more often than not. I have also used the PF46 at times. Walmart or Amazon should have the PF61 easy enough. I added the PF61 ultra (or whatever they call the black one) to a Rock Auto order and will put that on before my summer adventures. I believe the Super Tech filters come out of the same factory as the ACDelco ones.... I'd be surprised if they are any different.

Another honorable mention for a Premium Guard made filter is the NAPA Gold FIL 1522... but do check to make sure to not get old stock, look for cellophane covering on the bottom and "leak tested" on the top.

If you have access to any commercial pricing, a master pack at NAPA can be under $6 per filter.

ALSO -- if you ever want a "direct" lookup for a long Gen 3 LS SAE thread filter, just search for a 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS.

20 yrs old with 145k ? I would run anything I could get a good deal on. Rockauto has the AC filters under $5. Between and AC filter and synthetic oil youre ahead of 99.5% of the rest of the country on maintaining that vehicle.

couldn’t pay me to screw on a champ built filter knowing what we know now and the terrible QC seen in recent C&P’s

I made an online order for the microgard select at Oreillys. I’m gonna pick it up on the way to work this evening. It and 6quarts of Castrol full synthetic 5w30(already on hand) should have him set for awhile.

Great filter!! High efficiency and great quality. You won’t be disappointed.
Glad to hear it! I haven’t purchased a Microgard filter in at least five or so years since I changed the oil on my maw in-laws old 94’ Chevy before she sold it. I liked them then and I know I’ll be happy to put it on my dads truck for him.
