So back in December I sold my '95 F-150 to friend for his son. I owned it for 15 years and it was used for truck duty. Hauling scrap to the scrap yard or renting stuff from the depot. I don't drive it a whole lot. I think I put less than 20k miles in 15 years. It has the 4.9 engine. I bought these Distance plus filters and stockpiled them because they didn't have startup noise. I gave my friend 10 filters with the truck and we changed the oil today. It might have been on the truck 3 or 4 years. I can't remember. Not too many miles though. I might have used Valvoline synthetic. Might have been Mobil 1. Can't remember. Filter looked good but the ADBV had a knick in it and just feeling it out it tore. Other than that pretty good. Some chunks inside of it. Put on a new D3500 and restore and protect 5w30.

That 4.9 straight six could run nearly forever on any oil/filter combo.....a very strong if not the most fuel efficient engine IMO.
.
I also bought a few D+ filters (size 3422 which is the Fram 3600 oversized filter I can use on my Ford Escape) when Walmart had them on 'CLEARANCE' for $3 each a few years ago.

I used to buy them for my 4.9L F-150 as well. Never cut them open back then but now I know what they'd look like. Nice pics.

I'll agree there. This one has just over 254k. Tonight the engine idled smooth as a Lexus.

I've told this story once before on this site (I think) but a friend/coworker had a Ford with that 4.9 (a van I think) and sold it to a friend of his. A few months later the friend pulled up and the van was making engine noise louder than my friend remembered it ever made. He asked the new owner if he'd checked the oil and the answer was 'No'. When he checked the oil it was running on only a quart of oil...he topped it up with 4 or 5 qts. and it quieted right down and ran for many years after that. I had a similar experience with a Dodge van with a 318 V8 that I drove on weekends in NYC making deliveries while in high school. Those old OHV American engines were strong and virtually idiot proof.

That 4.9 is arguably the most durable light truck engine ever made (a tight race with the GM 292 inline 6). The chewed up ADBV was common on Purolator/Bosch filters of that era due to an inability to deburr base plates-they ALL did it!

In point of fact, "all" the Bosch/Distance plus did NOT have issues resulting in some indentions or tears on the adbv. The D3323 (7317 equivalent) had no issues with the adbv because no part of it resisted on the round inlet holes. The oblong inlet filters more prone to it because portion of central part of adbv rested on the inlets. Years ago, I used three of the D3323 c&p them all, found them to be excellent filters. Linked is an example of results same as mine, chose it because pics better than mine at that time (photobucket) and show adbv.

Thanks for c&p.

Most fuel efficient??? Hardly. It was never designed for that. I have owned a 4.9 since 1997, gets "decent" mileage but everyone has their opinion on what is great.. What it has going for it is its durability.

Thanks for the pics and the follow up. When I saw those wavy pleats I though, "that filter has been on there a while".

I think he meant that it's not the most fuel efficient !
Used to help out on a friends farm they had at the time a 80 or 81 f100 with the 4.9 that thing was used more as a tractor than a truck .

Yeah this particular truck has the 5 speed manual with the 2.73 rear end. Slow as can be. It's somewhere around 15 mpg
My 87 has a 4spd. OD manual and a 3.55 rear end and it has plenty of go. My average MPG is 15-16. The 2.73 rear end is the anchor you are dragging.

I had a 1990 ford Econoline with the same 4.9 but with 3:08's in the rear and a C6 automatic. I feel like was definitely quicker. I put a tach on that van and the engine was screaming at 3900 rpm where it would shift. If you drove it like that with the dog house off it was loud. The engine was practically in the car with you.

Sorry, meant NOT the most fuel efficient! Although it’s quite a bit better than the two 6 liter LS vans I drive these days…

One of my customers had a mid ‘90s OBS F-350 SRW 4X4 with a 460 and a 4 speed manual (top loader, maybe)-THAT was a tractor masquerading as a truck!
