My recollection is that earlier polls were similar, and the ones I'm personally familiar with all have Mobil in the top spot.

It's unimportant if it's a statistically accurate poll. It's just a bunch of folks saying what oil they use (and some might use more than one) and a guy who's (probably) not a statistician compiling a list of the responses. I bet a number of folks read the list just to see how "their oil" compares to others

It's like looking at a woman in a diaphanous dress: you can't see everything but you get a sense of what's there.

I meant to respond/comment on your UOA results: HOLY MOLY! 😳

one observation has me curious: @wwillson’s extended use of an older HPL HDEO in his gas truck showed a fair amount of Boron, in addition to a fair amount of Moly. Could be my lack of exposure, but it seems their PCMO does without the Boron...perhaps with extra extra Moly. For better or for worse??? I had recently been surmising the good results of certain $$$ oils was partially due to the Boron…so this is a contradiction of that (neophyte) correlation/causation conclusion 😂

but a comment by someone closer to HPL (or other boutique / unicorn offering) on boron vs moly, or a link to existing discussion would be nice…on my list of things to look into.
 
Yes, I would rather “trust” Dave or HPL in general than, say, the head of Warren (sorry, probably an unwarranted slight), but it’s in my nature to try and understand a little bit of the “why.” Then, just to make a point, if Dave decided to triple his price, I might be better able to find a reasonably-priced alternative, that was 2/3rd as good at 1/4 the price. I wouldn’t feel this way if I didn’t have such a “challenged” engine…

I have nothing against "boutique oils". It's your money. Does anyone here have any hard evidence that HPL and Amsoil actually reduces wear when run at extended intervals (15-20K), vs using Off the Shelf synthetic at 5K intervals. That is what your paying for, the extended intervals, right? My very random thought are for normally driven vehicles.

marketing 101.... create a need ( even when there isn't one) and offer a product that fits that need... The more obscure the perceived problem and the less cognizant the end user is, the better for sales. :)

All my comments are based upon having millions of miles of personal experience.

I have 220,000 miles of experience with High Performance Lubricants.

The capability of very extended OCIs makes it a wise choice IMV.

You're essentially buying more time when using an oil built for extended drain intervals. For wear, we know that the additive systems used in today's oils greatly exceed industry standard tests, with the top tier greatly exceeding them. What you'll get with an oil built for long drains is greater cleanliness, lower oxidation, lower volatility over a longer drain interval.
