Non-detergent oil is fine for certain applications of non automotive use such as lawnmowers. For very early auto engines it is fine too; my late Pop ran it in a 1952 MG TD to stop the leaks. I have used non-detergent oil many times to light campfires in a hurry on a rainy day. A very tiny amount of oil in any body of stagnant water is a very effective way of killing mosquito larvae.

I admit Accel is overpriced.

Our compressor at work calls for SAE30 ND oil. I change it 2x a year and it's been running every day since 1983.

Holy cats, that is a very interesting website.

One thing to note, basically all the oils that failed to meet spec don't have the API starburst on the front.

I'm sure everyone here knows it, but if it's got the API starburst, you should be A-OK.

Not if you want you mower engine to last, even back in the '80s B&S was recommending detergent multi vis oils for their engines...

This is straying but needs to be said, I measured head temp on my mower after last time I cut grass, Results??? 308*F!! Now this a flat head design with valves in block so no oil is actually in contact with the head, but temp of the block around the valve stems was 268*F and oil is exposed to this area...

So while the SA oil may fine in a compressor(I wouldn't use it even then), it should not be used in any small air cooled engine...

ST is a fine oil.

Saying it ISN'T shows you haven't learned much here......

My accord has over 390K miles on it and many of those were on ST. Now I use M1 EP or PP only for the longer OCI's. I would not buy the accel oils and golden state oils that you see in gas stations. other than those, all of today's store brand oils are good for at least 3-4K miles given the engine doesn't have a problem.
