.....out there anymore?

Oil tech seems to have gone crazy over the last decade.

Can you really go wrong with anything off the shelf now (besides SuperTech)?

Of course, new cars require super-thin oils, etc., but in general, oils are pretty dang'd good now.

Right?

Huh, who ever said SuperTech is bad oil? There have been many VOAs and UOAs of SuperTech and none have been awful as far as I know. Here is a recent one.

I'd say a "bad" oil would be the Accel SA-rated non-detergent oil that Wal-Mart sells right along with the rest of the oils. I always wonder when I see bottles missing off the shelf whether somebody had the misfortune of putting that into their engine. To be fair, though, there is a warning on the back saying that this oil is not for use in modern engines.

Ya, never understood who would pay 2.74 for Accel, not even a detergent oil.

Walmart SuperTech in Dino, Synthetic and Diesel are some pretty good oils at a very good price. IMO.....so are Advance Auto, Auto Zone, NAPA and many store brand oils.

I could never find out who currently makes SPECTRUM OIL sold in Kmart and Sears. Sears never acknowledged my e-mails for a PDS or a MSDS....so I just returned all of the oil to Kmart. "If they won't tell me what's in it....they can keep it!"

There were a few out of spec.....bad oils listed at one time. They are out there....just be aware of the oils. They could also be in bulk oil at some of the quick lube places.

Some names were Liberty, Bullseye, Everclear.

It does seem that todays oils are far better than those from the past.
What was the biggest jump in quality?....SJ to SL would be my guess.

Supertech may have had some problems/lawsuits, but overall their products are fine.

Check out the petroleum quality institute, there are several oils that don't meet spec, though probably not many you have heard of.

The only oil I've had bad luck with was Exxon Superflo. It always Superflowed out the tailpipe.

I think even the Dollar store oil I use for door hinges, etc. might've been better.

Can someone explain to me why they still allow SA oils to be sold at all? I can find them on the shelves of stores in metropolitan areas, and can't think of anything that would call for such an oil in an urban environment.
Nobody reads the back of the bottle, and I'm sure some poor soul has bought the stuff because it was the cheapest. Maybe as a top up oil, or an emergency quart...who knows, but it shouldn't be used at all.

The only thing Everclear I would trust is their vodka.

With that said, ST isn't an bad oil at all. I've ran their stuff before.

IMO...Some internal combustion applications call for a non-detergent motor oil and it seems the SA fits the bill. Lawn Mowers, weed whackers, gasoline generators etc may all call for SA motor oil. Then again some people use it in motor vehicles if they have a vintage, relic auto that can only use SA. Jay Leno may know what to use it in.....

Jeez, read the VOAs on those off brand oils. 2.3 cST at 100C.

My last noteworthy supertech experience was it leaking about 10% faster out of my wife's corsica 3.1 about ten years back... Almost static, and you can't blame the oil for an engine that's a known leaker at 210k miles. Have used it since then without drama.

Our compressor at work calls for SAE30 ND oil. I change it 2x a year and it's been running every day since 1983.
