Battery Charge -- not about Rihanna

My Nokia N800 internet tablet's battery went ti... uh, toast up. It doesn't hold a charge well anymore. A Nokia replacement battery (BP-5L Li-Poly) costs about $50. I can get an inexpensive but likely cheap knock-off on Feebay for between $3.99 and about $27. Most of those suspect batteries ship from Hong Kong. Should I even consider those or should I simply spring for a Nokia battery?

I have had very mixed results with various cell phone, computer and tool batteries I have bought on FleaBay. I think I am money ahead but haven't kept track. some have been junk and some have been as good as OEM for a lot less money.

It's a [censored] shoot and a chance I will continue to take.

I would go with OEM battery if you plan on keep the phone. I don't know too much about the quality of the cheaper battery and don't want it to mess up the phone or battery to overheat.

All the phones I used, I always charge it when there is 1 bar of battery left. My current phone (~2.5 years old) still has the original battery and gets about the same battery life from when I got the phone new.

Li-Ion/Pol lost some of its life per year, permanently, even in the ideal condition. So the rule of thumb is the fresher the better. IMO $50 for a battery is a rip off, but you have no way of telling how's the quality of the battery they ship you. I got one that was dead on arrival in the past.

Try to stick with a reputable seller, mine charges $1 for the battery but $6 shipping, he said he will refund my battery but not the shipping (***!!!!)

lpcmidst128, this is not a phone. It may well have a Nokia phone battery, though. The battery is probably about 1 to 2 years old. I bought the device very lightly used. The battery has a continuous run time of about 4.5 hours, but it's decreased to 30 minutes with almost no warning before it goes dead.

Shannow, every vendor shows the same picture and I have no idea what brand battery I'd be buying!

Panda, if I knew a reputable online battery vendor I wouldn't have posted!

That'll work. My main gripe with the HK battery mainline is the shelf life....most of the batteries, while not used, are typically not anywhere near fresh as a daisy....like a year old Li-ion....no thanks.

I have always bought replacement batteries from cellphoneshop.net and found that even though they are knock-off's they work very well and last a long time... They are very cheap too!

I buy all my stuff from there...

So I had a nagging suspicion and tried something out. I have a second N800, which is a backup that I don't use, besides charging it once a week. It holds a charge just fine. I swapped out the batteries, and low and behold, it's only the N800 that I use all the time that drains either battery much too quickly. I think this may have to do with the last software update. Something appears to cause excess battery drain. I believe some other N800 users have experienced this problem. I'll have to look into it...

From what I read on the N800 forums, it is a common problem with OS2008. The reason is supposedly not known to (= admitted by) the Nokia developers. It appears that the device may sporadically go into battery power sapping reboot loops during the charging process. Weeeeeeeeeeee!
