basic AR for really good price...

one of my local haunts had a 'used' basic AR for under $400...disassembly showed no real wear & very little carbon; if shot at all...guessing 1 or 2 boxes shot thru at most; what brand/model you ask?!? well...I'll tell ya in a minute!

it is a basic M4 style AR-15 in 5.56; has a typical GI style front sight, pic rail upper, flip up FAB defense rear sight, typical M4 furniture & grip, average mil-spec trigger, and basic controls; it does have an 'oversize' trigger guard; 1:9 twist lightweight barrel with bird cage muzzle brake (semantics); came with 1 regular capacity aluminum mag...

what is it? del-ton dt sport 2 that cost $375...my preferred platform is a Ruger mini-14 ranch rifle; can't afford one at almost 3 times more expensive...

$175 + FFL fee more than the rifle OP is looking at. The PSA is a good rifle/great price though.

yep...bought it; psa ok...had one @ 2yrs ago & 2 of the gas rings cracked & broke after 225-250rds; psa wanted the whole rifle sent in for the repair...I opted to take just the bcg to a shop that sets up ar's for local LE depts; took 2hrs & a few bucks vs not having my rifle for 10+ days; prefer radical ar's for new budget purchases...lot more attention to detail & the azimuth technologies bcg's they use are great for the price bracket!

So loud and 5.56 loses a fair amount of velocity out of that barrel. A close in weapon. If you’re going to get one - get a suppressor for it and pay for the second stamp to get a proper stock.

I just wish .300 BLK wasn’t so expensive… out of an SBR, it has much better velocity than 5.56

I like 5.56, but give me at least a 16” barrel.

Or use a pistol caliper round. I have same in 10mm, well an actual SBR. Grandfathered. None of the above legal here anymore, even OP

Good place for a solid platform at a great price would be PSA. I am a frequent visitor.

SBR doesn't make such a good close-in weapon IMHO, even though I have a couple. They make better trunk guns. This is my close in choice :

Del-Ton makes a good entry level AR. I have one. Ruger also makes a nice one.

last year my cousin came across a combat armory sale selling mil spec 5.56's made by radical firearms cheap so I ordered one, even with tax, shipping and transfer fee it was only $400, put a cheap bushnell red dot and a folding foregrip on it and still have less than $500 into it.

Get into rolling your own 300BO. The PITA is making your own brass from spent 5.56
You kinda have to shoot alot to justify the initial expenditure of the reloading supplies if it is purely an economic decision...but I didn't notice that woohan happened from an ammo prospective.

Any love for the Smith & Wesson m&p15? I bought one back in 2020 for $550 w/Magpul + iron sights. Sold it a few years ago but it seemed to work well enough, and cheap enough that scratching it from speed reloads wasn't an issue.

I have/had one, worked just fine. Ended up swapping virtually every part, of course

Delton gets a bad wrap. No sure why. But the barrels are button rifled, and some are chrome lined. You can get a full upper, with a 4150 chrome lined barrel for cheap, under 200 usually. AR15 are arguably the easiest long guns to put together from near scratch, and there are so many good parts out there, it is hard to go wrong, with a run of the mill Delton. They (like many others) use toolcraft bolts, and carriers, and for the ones I have seen, machining looks good.

There is not much difference in a 2000 dollar AR and a 500 dollar one. barrel quality mostly, but $1500 can buy a bunch of ammo, and or barrels.

No issue with the Delton here.

PSA has some really good deals on AR's. Get on their mailing list and there is usually something good most every day. Be it guns, ammo, or accessories.

You can choose complete AR's, or match whatever uppers to whatever lowers to get the exact weapon you want. The gun shop down the road from me builds all of his AR's off of PSA stripped lowers. And he told me he has never gotten one back with a receiver related issue.

IMO, as long as they meet Milspec, they are fine. The higher the price, the most fined tuned/accurate they CAN be, but not always the case. The advantage in my mind is that you can have several in several places, and always have one when you need it, or close at hand at least.
