Back to Back 2024 M3 vs 2024 M2 in the Mountains

BMW signed a deal with Yokohama and they are now BMW OE supplier (BMW did not drop others. Yokohama was added to the bunch).
ZF8 will always be ahead of manual performance-wise. But, I would still choose manual.
As for design, I do think F series was better design. However, BMW (this is strictly an enthusiast opinion) botched the F30 IMO with an attempt to please everyone, meaning trying to get the Lexus, Audi, and MB crowd. I still think F87 is best BMW they made since E90 so there was definitely potential in F series. I am glad they decided to go a different route in the G series, meaning being more focused on traditional BMW drivers, but I agree on a design.
The only problem is the kidney grilles, the rest of the car looks beautiful IMO.

I'm not a fan of black cars, but G80 M3 would be the only one I'd get it in black, which hides the giant grilles better than the other colours.

The rear end is too Lexus like.

I was not a fan of that one piece LCD cluster that looks like it was tacked on. The M4 layout was a much cleaner look IMO.

The big curved screen looks like a bad aftermarket modification. It was one of the reasons that I replaced a BMW with something other than another BMW for the first time ever- and I've had at least one BMW in the garage since 1983.

Man I like it. Set it and forget. And I use the vocal commands for tire pressure, oil level, setting AC, etc.
I like how it looks like it’s floating. Oh well- to each their own.

Exactly- to each their own. As I've said BMW's exterior/interior design language pretty much insures that I won't buy any BMW newer than an M2 CS. My next car will likely be another AMG or a 911. Two former BMW CCA National Board members that I also served with have already moved on to Zuffenhausen- to provide their sporting rides, at any rate...

New generation designs tend to do that. Fans will leave the fold. At first we flinch but over the years I’ve found that BMW stretches ID norms and it grows on you. Some are ho-hum, (Bangle), and some are really really great. Risk-Reward. This comes from an owner of the E46 now a classic. but since the launch I grow tired of people bashing the design of the new M3. Mainly because they judge it on photographs, and I have learned in my own experience that photographs do not capture the dimensionality and cool factor of the design.
IMHO the G80 is Smokin hot- and I get compliments everytime I fuel up and in random places, men and women, and I’m always surprised since I read online how many people abhor them.
Porsche? To me not exactly pushing the envelope on design. But I get it- it’s a safe space

I've owned BMWs since 1983; everything from a 2002 to an E24 M6, not to mention a Bavaria, an i3, and an F22 M235i. And I was a product specialist and sales associate at a BMW center from 2016-2018. I can live with the exterior styling of the G80 but as I said, the cobbled-together interior design is a deal breaker for me. It's the subsequent cars that I find have the most unattractive exterior design. The G87 design brief must have been, "Make it look like a Lego version of an F87." The new 5er is also pretty bizarre. Most all are too heavy for me to use an an HPDE instructor car, so there's that.

Vocal commands? So if I understand this correctly, I am having AC/DC running at highest volume, carving curves, shifting gears, and I have to cut music off to adjust something?

Oh, never mind, no manual. Won’t happen anyway.

At least Dukec has now been kicked upstairs to R-R.

I didn't fully embrace the "living room" (vs the older cockpit) themes Bangle embraced during his era, but the current interior dashboard designs reek of laziness.

To me, the E38/39/46 interiors struck the best balance between function and luxury. Some style, but still businesslike.

If I wanted to spend money on another BMW, I'd be looking for an F87 M2 or E90 M3.

The guys on the BMW mailing lists saw the writing on the wall, and started defecting to Zuffenhausen years ago.

In other news, Bruno Sacco has passed.

One other thing, my C43 allows me to set up my instrument panel to display oil temperature, transmission temperature and tire pressure/temperature simultaneously- and I can choose from three different speedometer/tachometer displays. I prefer the Supersport configuration:

Voice command isn't all that great when underway anyways. In our 230i it has a 60/40 chance of it delivering during highway driving.

Yes, not only does the screen look cheap and tacked-on- but most functions are now buried in the touchscreen submenus.

The only thing I can figure is that for people who like the screens it's their subconscious is telling them that the car would be more expensive without it.

IIRC owners of non-M cars can now download an M-instrument cluster.

I downloaded the M splash screen to the iDrive of my M235i, and I coded out the waiver screen. I was going to download the Rolls Royce splash screen to my i3 before I turned it in (to mess with the NCM I used to work with).

I know. Voice command is nothing new.
But why would I do it? It should be the ultimate driving machine. Roll down the windows and enjoy driving. Why should I spend time messing with menus, then submenus, then sub-sub menus? Give me basic functions in physical form. If they want to pack bunch of other stuff on screen, fine.
That is why I am keeping E90 until my 8yrs old starts driving. Then maybe I get something that still has manual in BMW, if not, well, I guess Subaru?🤮🤮🤮
