Today while driving around I noticed a weird sound when turning. I knew that my axel boots were dry and would eventually need to be replaced. So I checked the driver's side where the noise wqas coming from and sure enough it was ripped and I got a nice hand full of grease. The passenger side is just dry.

I called the shop I deal with and got a qoute for 260 dollars per side, includes 1 yr parts and labour warranty. Dealer said about 600 for both....Good price?

Just did the drivers side on my daughters 92 Accord. Reman axle was $110 cdn and it took me 1 1/4 hrs on the floor with a foor jack. Done them before but $260us sounds a little high for what a person could do themselves.

I also had a ripped cv boot on 95 Accord resently. I just changed oil and found out, there was no noise, the boot was OK couple months ago. You must be were driving with ripped boot for a while to got it noisy. New half axle from Honda was $200, new axle from NAPA was $100. My indy mech charge $130 for one side installed with 1 year warranty on part and labor.Caveat, my old axle core value was $100. One member on Accord forum reported to pay $40 to local axle rebuild place to rebuild his own axle what mostly concluded of clean old grease than put new grease and boot on. Also members reported multiple problems like vibration and ABS malfunction, from axle bought in Autozone, Advance Auto, PepBoys. So much for lifetime warranty.

Only buy new CV axles. Re-machining a used axle results in the removal of the hardened surfaces so you will see that your new USED axles do not outlive the boots.

I was told by the Honda dealer about a year ago that my axel boots had to be changed now! And it was a 600 qoute. I said I have to save the money. I took it to the shop I use and they said it could wait since the boots were dry not cracked. I said okay. Well I guess they did split open. Dealer wanted 600 for boots only.

Well I got it done. Car drives super nice now...

It seems to me that repairs are more expensive here in East Lansing, Michigan compared to other cities around...

Thanks for the input guys!

This is where it pays to be under your car frequently (oil changes, greasing the fittings etc). I caught a boot that cracked open right away. The shops all just replace the entire axle because it makes no sense to do the boot (a complete disassembly any way) when the axle will only add less than $100. I put on a 'split' boot at $20 that does not require pulling it all apart.

Subaru Forester. Lost enner boots on both axels. Dealer quoted 400 for both. I and friend did it for 94 dollars using OEM boots and greash/band kit and new axel nuts. Total job took about 2 + hours with floor jack and lots of rags.
