Autozone sold me used oil

If I could not return "used" oil, I would call the credit card company and place the transaction in dispute. This is reason enough to use a credit card.

Been there, done that.

I have my doubts about all the oil dispensed from those large drums at the kwik-e lube places. It would be easy to blend used oil in and no one would be any wiser.

I see this as another reason to do oil changes yourself. And when in doubt, buy QS Synthetic in those pretty clear bottles.

I know a guy who worked at one of those fast oil change places and he said when people ask for a specific brand or weight
they said OK but it was all pumped from the same tank and everyone got the same weight and brand of oil.

When I take my used oil into a Checker Auto Parts store, they take the oil back and dump it into their used oil drum and then bring the empty bottles back to me. Seems to me, that would prevent the problem from happening.

Sorry Jim..... but you purchased used oil. Always look to see if the twist-off seal is locked on.

Agreed I actually had this happen to me at a carquest when I was in college. They wouldn't take the oil back so I just called up Amex, told them what happened and needless to say when my bill came due that month the oil charge @ carquest wasn't there.

I always see Rotella at walmart where the foil seal is broken. Never though it was used, but was always paranoid some punk dropped something bad in there. I always check now, though I have noticed that the new bottles of RTS don't have the foil anymore. Kind of wish they did.

This is common...I heard about this "scam" at a Walmart several years ago...

Someone buys the oil from the store, dumps it into what they are using it in, then fills the bottle with their drain oil...they then return it to the store for a refund, which the store then restocks it without checking seal integrity.

Remember, most of the people working behind the return counter are tire of people chewing on them all day long and really don't care...they are just happy to get through the without another confrontation.

There is no "twist-off" seal on Rotella, it is a foil seal that is easily removed. Once removed, you wouldn't know if it had a seal or not.

Many oils have no tamper evidence...I bet 99% of the people that buy oil never look at the seal...it was an honest mistake.

Now I only go to Napa - a small family owned shop full of older techs that know what they're talking about. Sure it may cost a bit more but ... I really enjoy going there. Also, they know how to provide really great customer service that keeps you coming back.

You know what I have the same situlation with an NAPA store down the street. As far as buying parts I prefer NAPA and World Wide Auto Parts(CARQUEST). But they are quite a bit higher. As far as discount parts. I will not use Kragen again. After I mailed in a rebate form for Valvoline motor oil in October. Kragen sent me a check for 14 dollars and my last name was changed to one that does not exist in the english dialict. When I called to get my correct name on a rebate check I was refused.

Reading this thread really made me think. I had to go check the seals on the gallon Valvoline jugs in my stash..I never thought of someone returning used oil for a refund. I always check the filters before I get to the checkout, but never thought about checking the foil seals on jugs or the lids on quart bottles. You can bet I will from now on though.

The things some people will do never cease to amaze me. The other day I saw some guy in front of me throw out about half a dozen coke bottles and water bottles as he was going down the road. Then he pulled into a gas station! Why not just wait till he got there and throw them in the station's garbage can? Would that have made too much sense?

Saw an ad for an "$19.95 oil change special" at Firestone and the were touting the fact that they now used "Recycled ("FILTERED THREE TIMES!") Oil" and the VERY very small print indicated there was also an additional $3 "recycling charge"...

Cheers!
