Autozone sold me used oil

Returning used oil is becoming more and more frequent.
Walmart is the easiest - no questions or inspection.
Obviously, it happens elsewhere.

Get to know a helpful employee or better yet a manager at the discount store you do business at. Say hi and develop a relationship. I'll bet that if you did the problem would have been instantly taken care of in your favor. Relationships trump company policy every time. There is a Pep Boys I shop at and employees say hi to me and we talk about cars and racing engines. They have helped me find parts and stuff and have come up with coupons even out of date ones for me. I met the shop foreman and later help him with a problem they were having with a car. One day I asked if I could put my car on the rack to find a rattle and tighten it up. They put my car on the rack and I had three mechanics on a slow night crawling all under my car tightening things up and there was no charge. I think developing a relationship is good for both parties and it's much better than a warranty or company policy. It's easy to do. Try it.

I check the seal on everything I buy before paying: food, drinks, oil, whatever. Sorry you hadn't learned this lesson until now. And shame on AZ for not believing you!

I just had the same thing happen at Home Depot. Only good news, it was on their clearance rack for a buck so I'm not out much. I guess I have to remember to check everything before leaving the store.

And yes, why is it they took it from someone else yet I'm the criminal after getting screwed?

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

A lot of you guys have had similar experiences. I wish I could say I'm surprised.
I have a good relationship with the nearby Carquest, and I should have went there to begin with. They always have had excellent customer service, and the staff is knowledgable.
I guess that's what I get for trying to hurry and save 4 miles of driving. Autozone will never get my business again.

I rented a Pitman Arm puller from Autozone about a year ago. Had to put up about $20 before hand and get it back when you return the item. Anyway, the Pitman Arm was on REALLY tight and I broke the puller. I returned it to Autozone and told them what happened. The AZ guy says don`t worry about it, it`s not a big deal and he will take care of it. and refunded my deposit. Needless to say, I deal with my local AZ all the time.

I agree.
I have a good relation with the manager of my local Auto-zone.
I have gotten acquainted with the guy's working their in fact last week they ask my advice on a car that a customer was having trouble with.
I would not have the problem that the Original Poster had in fact the manager has bent company rules for me more than once.

That is littering, which is illegal.

Littering if you're lucky. Since it's used oil, some ambitious prosecutor might even try prosecuting that as hazardous waste dumping.....

I also bought used oil before, but it was at an Advance Auto Parts. But they took it back, no questions asked.

the bigger and richer the corporation is, less they care. total corporatisation of america created levels of bureacrosy instead of real customer service. one unhappy customer is nothing to them, they have thousands more. the fact that these companies proudly hire all kinds of bums with no IQ and pay them miserly with very little or no benefits doesn't help either. I have aap, autozone and napa near me. autozone is the least friendly/helpfull of them all(there are occasional exceptions, but overall autozone does suck). I go to AAP which is a little better.

Correct. I am a regular at the local Carquest, and they are great. I just wish Autozone had tried harder to earn my business, apparently they didn't care.

Having bought one bottle of GC with a cracked seal, I learned my lesson pretty quickly. Luck for me, this was when lots of noobies were cracking the bottles opent to see if the oil was green...
