So are they basically saying that the Malibu and 200 are so far behind the curve they didn't even want to test them?

Not sure the reason behind not having Malibu there , I do know the redesigned 200 is scheduled to debut in January of next year so they might be waiting for that.

I think it is more of what their subscriber base purchases. The typical Malibu buyer does not read automotive enthusiast magazines. Most retail buyers are of the older conservative generation.

Anyone who rides in a new 2013 Malibu and then picks a Kia/Hyundai will quickly feel the difference.

As usual, the Koreans are coarse and unrefined. Wait till someone notices the floorboards flutter!

I love the new '6' and the new Accord. It seems Honda has figured out a few tweaks making a CVT into a nice daily commuter car.

+1

To me it looks like the Mazda, Honda, VW, and Ford are the real contenders.

If this was MotorTrend I would call the Honda the winner, but since
Automobile is about fun to drive being just as important I would say they pick the new Mazda 6.

Happy to see these new cars aren't too heavy compared to others. 3100-3200 lbs seems like a good weight for a vehicle this size, especially with all the safety requirements weighing down new cars.

I'm about as close to Mazda fan-boy as someone my age gets to be, and I don't disagree with them. (we get to call ourselves "enthusiast" after a certain amount of time)

It's all in the last paragraph. I'm actually quite happy that Mazda didn't win. That they didn't comprimise with the current version of the 6. They made a Mazda and that's not for everybody.

Pretty good write-up!

Also the fact that the 4cyl Accord in a manual can do 0-60 in 6.8 seconds and still achieve such fuel economy is just mind boggling. Cars really have made huge strides over the last few years.

A comment in the article about the Mazda 6:

Quote:
Nelson is hoping to discover a cut-price BMW 3-series but is disappointed to find just another midsize sedan. He says, "To say it's more exciting to drive than its competitors is like saying a bowl of Special K breakfast cereal with banana slices is more exciting than plain old Special K."

If that's what they consider the more enthusiast-oriented car compared to an Accord, I don't have much faith in the Accord.

I saw that comment, too, and was surprised by it. It conflicts with other comments made by other drivers, calling a number of cars engaging/fun/easy to drive. It sounds like one particular person (whomever Nelson is), perhaps used to driving BMWs or Porsches, expecting too much from the FWD midsize sedan segment.
