Automatic trans filter kits

Usually with a value kit you use the included filter and reuse your OE gasket-- chucking the cheezy one in the box.

I've been doing fine with the cheapies from advance auto, even though IIRC the box claims it's "light duty." IMO the car is just happy to be slurping through any sort of new filter.

You can NEVER go wrong with OEM. Even if it's a little more money, it's not like you have to change it very often.

Any of the major oil filter brands also have good transmission filters, even FRAM.

ATP kits have a black fiber gasket that I've had good luck with. As far as filter media, I have no idea what differences there might be.

I used a Taiwan-made ATP for my 2010 Vibe. The original was a USA Filtran and the gasket was cork/rubber. I had ordered a Beck Arnley, but the media had a strange crease or fold that I didn't trust. The gasket with that one was all rubber.

Most filters I have seen lately are half plastic and half metal, including the one for my Vibe and both NAPA and Carquest's offerings for my Chevy 4L60E. I guess I say that because the first trans filter I changed was the all-metal one for a Turbo 400.

On my old Caravan I bought an OEM US made Filtran for about $16 and a Felpro gasket for about $4.50.

The Felpro gasket was very stout rubber/fiber type material that compressed very nice. It came in a flat box, unfolded. Impressive.

I checked out the CarQuest Filtran filter with included gasket for about $14. This Filtran was made in China and the thin gasket was folded up in a wad (exagerating for effect).

I am confident the Carquest would work. But, for something I will only do once or twice in the vehicle's lifetime, I don't see the point of trying to save $10.

I just today did a transmission fluid drain and filter change on my GMC. I used an AC DELCO filter kit which included the nice black rubber OEM pan gasket and a new filter tube seal. Got it at ROCKAUTO for less than the Autozone Duralast kit of questionable quality.

I chose OEM for the better gasket and filter plus I don't like dropping pans more than needed in case of a bad seal or filter kit.

Is it a good idea to re-use the original gasket?
I would think the last thing I would want is a weepy/leaky 20 bolt pan.

Are the original gaskets siliconed on? I have the 4T65E 4-speed transmission in the '07 Uplander.

Should I apply sealer to a good replacement gasket?

I'll likely get the kit here in Canada. Shipping to Canada from Rockauto for a kit is $17.

The original pan gasket is very robust, reuseable and not inexpensive. No sealer should be used. I would just get an ACDelco filter without the gasket.

FRAM makes a good trans filter. Pro King is "ok." You can't beat OEM.
On the Ford "AOD" type trans, the gasket can be reused, and is also noted on the pan.
When I did a trans service with pans that used a cork type gasket I would apply a very thin layer of grease on the pan then put on the gasket.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks.

^^^Most GM slushboxes have a high quality rubber gasket that is reusable several times.

Most aftermarket gaskets are a leak waiting for a place to happen...

Well said Steve! My experience has been the same in comparing OEM to aftermarket gaskets that leak.

I have never seen an aftermarket transmission pan gasket that was as good or better than the OEM gasket.

As for filters, sometimes the aftermarket filter ends up being made by the same company that built the OEM filter.

on my 06 Saturn Relay, I didn't reuse the pan gasket, although it's very reusable and very well built, it hangs on my wall for backup.
I'm using the rubber/fiber gasket from ATP. I've never ever had a leak or failure from their gaskets.
Of course, no sealants whatsoever.. just make sure everything is super clean & dry!

I wish there was as much info available on trans filters as we have (in general) on oil filters.

I cut one open last month and they are pretty simple. Just a "sock" of media the fluid flows through from one side to the other.
