It seems like there is always such confusion about approvals when in reality the approval is supposed to reduce confusion.

The problem in the case of the German manufacturers is that they specifically state the approval where almost all US manufacturers cite any XwXX meeting an approval. I've never had a GM product that didn't have the oil grade directly on the cap. My VW does not have the grade on the cap and it seems almost no German cars do because that isn't the metric they're using for oil selection.
Which is a sensible metric (HT/HS). At least some Mercedes-Benz approvals are now dropping allowed grades, I’ve always thought that was a needless and silly restriction.

Absolutely agree. The difference is that the grade is one of the largest print on the front of the bottle and we're looking in a sea of text on the back for an approval. We all know this here for the most part, but I think that's precisely why it's more difficult for the average consumer.
504.00 is built off of ACEA C3. Oils under this specification would be your heavier 30 grades and only 30 grades.
Example: Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 or 0w30. Run to Walmart and call it a day!
20 grades fall under 508.00
As I noted, there are no 20-grade oils with VW 504 00 approval.
Use what your manual says.
What does the sticker under the hood say? I would not be surprised if VW decided to recommend a thinner grade after the fact w/out reprinting the manual.
On an aside I've noticed that oil companies are towing the corporate line from the automakers with regards to the oil recommendation. After all the Euro makes have been chasing the CAFE dragon like junkies over the past couple of years.
2024 should be 508, 0w-20. 504 will work too, but confusing customers with oil specs seems to be VW's M.O.
Sorry, I hit post too soon. When I use the search tool on Mobil 1 it gives me the one above; however, when I look at the specs you are correct. When I look at the PDS for this one, though, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0W-20, it does say it's API SP, ILSAC GF-6A, ACEA C3, & ACEA C4 approved. But I should focus on the VW 504 00 instead? ...I'm brand new at this German stuff. Been on two 3.6L Pentastars for a decade.

Use what VW/Audi specify. The API spec is secondary, usually they say you can use one quart of those if you need to top up only. What matters in your case is 508 or 504, it's still not clear what you actually need (check the sticker under the hood).
Yes, as I and everyone else has been saying in this thread, focus on the approval and ignore grade. It is irrelevant with the VW approval. The approval defines everything you need for your engine.
Ya, so much for the book. Under the hood says SAE 0W-20 or VW 508. Go figure.
If it's a 2024, it's more than likely a 508. What motor is this?
The 2.0 TFSI (40 not the 45). I think it's like 201HP. So that brings me back to the Mobil 1™ ESP x2 0W-20 which is 508 compliant per the PDS.

I saw that video earlier. Oil had noting to do with it IMO. The tune blew it up, it just detonated and broke the ring land on that piston. you tune them and you take that risk. There is a reason the factory doesn't push them that far. It simply didn't have enough octane to support the power level it was at plain and simple. Too much boost for the octane being run. Engine protections can only do so much, sooner or later you pay the price.
