It seems like between different ATF the biggest factor other than viscosity is the friction characteristic. Assuming all else (seal compatibility, viscosity / plumbability, oxidation / nitration resistance, detergency, etc) are all good enough and can be made universal as a Jack of All Trade ATF.

How do we know the friction property of an ATF is good enough for a particular transmission or in place of a particular ATF?

Is there any test result of universal / aftermarket ATF vs OEM spec ATF in any particular transmission or clutch pack material setup?

The car or transmission manufacturer comes up with specs for the ATF. One would assume that takes many factors about the transmission into account. Its up to a ATF maker to come up with an ATF that meets those specs. The specs overlap somewhat so that is how some companies like Amsoil have an ATF that meets many (but not all) specs.

Look on the Amsoil website for some ATF test results. I am sure there are some there.

ATF is modified for friction concerning clutches and bands [except typeF]. This is #1.
Don't worry about friction for moving parts. For that, just keep it clean.

This is the exact friction I'm interested in, especially for the spec of each standard (i.e. Dex VI, Mer LV, Aisin 3309, Toyota WS, Honda Z1/DW1, ATF+4, etc) and the universal fluid (like Maxlife or Castrol IM).
