Asking for a friend, thinking to use "lightly used oil"

Yeah any UOA would negate the savings from buying a 5 quart jug of used oil for $1.50.

Enjoy these threads though.

The Mercedes forums have crazy stuff for sale too, people selling used Oxygen sensors, brake pads, rotors etc. I just shake my head and don't even comment.

This reminds me of Southeast Asia and the repacking that goes on there of many items. A lot of stuff is in a cellophane bag with the contents written with a felt marker. Salt, sugar, oil, flour, you name it.

Go to a gas station and ask for a liter of oil to top off with and the attendant comes out with a liter Coke bottle filled with oil. Yes sir, this is genuine Mobil 1 oil.

Start the car out on a FRESH oil change of Supertech Synthetic High Mileage and Fram ULTRA filter. Then just add more ST oil as needed. The Ultra filter will last 1 year or 2.

There are two discussions going on in my head.
1.He has a "decent" runner. If he buys the oil and uses it, and a problem with the engine arises, the oil may or may not be the cause, but it will get the blame.
2.What's the motivation of the seller? A buck fifty is hardly worth trying to sell it, unless the oil cost the seller zero. The problem isn't how used the oil is as much as what's in that jug? Bacon fat, leftover hazardous fluids that you pay to dispose, benzene, I don't know. Not knowing what's in there is the problem. Was it previously stored in a container that had brake fluid in it that wasn't properly cleaned out? Etc.

The guy (my friend) bought his son (17) a used Mercury Marquis 2004 (I call it the granny version) 4.6L V8 with 225k on the odo. Thing leaks and burns oil like no tomorrow. He knows his son is a monkey (his own description on his son) and will never care about it properly. Plus my friend just want a form of transportation for his son during these virus times avoiding public transportation. He goes to school and drives like 20 to 30 miles daily. Weather is cold in Michigan where he lives.

He was thinking to use "used oil" in it. He mentioned that he saw a yard sale close to where he lives and one guy was selling what he described "lightly used oil, Mobil1, less than 1000 miles on it, clean, and engine never overheated on it". The jug was 5 quarts and comes at $1.5.
Same guy was also telling him he might sell him used oil filters too for 50 cents each, motorcraft.

He was contemplating buying the jug, either use it right away or may send a sample for analysis.

What do you think?

I would use used oil only if 1) it is free, and 2) I or someone I know what they are doing is pulling it out of a car. So no, I won't buy used oil from the yard sale. It could be contaminated with coolant, it could be full of fuel dilution, the additive pack could be all used up in that 1000 miles due to engine problem.

You can always just put in cheap oil with API certification on it, preferably major brand. Used unknown source M1 is no good.

If you are broke sending someone else used oil for analysis vs just buying the cheapest rated oil, is going to make your cash situation worse.

If I knew the the history of the old oil, and I was a flat broke kid with a gross eater/ leaker (like I was) I might....

This kid doenst seem to know the source so thats an automatic no.

Ive been broke - it sucks at 17 I had a rig that leaked a quart every 500 miles and I put 500 a week on. buying that quart actually hurt - but I was stuck, I couldn't fix it and that was the only vehicle I had.

I bought used tires and once flushed oil that was still gold as a broke indiana farm kid driving a rig looking like I was out of the grapes of Wrath.

You learn to recognize the difference between used - and used up.

I never thought anyone would buy lightly used oil. Many years ago I gave my 3K used oil away. It came out of my new van I gave it to a neighbor who owned a Chevy van that would go through about a quart of oil every 200 miles, give or take. I supplied him with "free" lightly used oil for a few years until he junked his pile of garbage.
