Are you for or against Data Centers?

"you guys" ?? you got the wrong guy :)
Well perhaps not necessarily you, but your generation certainly pushed the globalization hard. Heck many still want to welcome Chinese EVs because they think it will somehow promote competition, judging from the various threads.

But now with AI and data enters we all of the sudden cannot let Chinese get ahead and we want to talk about our children’s future? That’s quite rich IMO.
So global economy doesn’t matter? What about competition? Why can’t we get the Chinese to do their cheap version of AI? Don’t you want to use it for $5.99 instead of $29.99?

Those people probably bought those houses because there was a corn field behind them.
They should have bought the cornfields as well to secure the permanent cornfield view.

Seriously though. There were ocean front view estates where my neighborhood back in Asia used to be at, and almost all of them became midland properties after 40 years because they keep filling in the ocean to make more lands.

Nobody promise to keep the adjacent lot the same for another 40 years. If you absolutely do not want to deal with those risk, the only choice is renting.

With the building explosion of data centers are you for or against them?

I am against them. They are noisy, use lots of water and too much power.

I am also afraid of the A.I that comes with it.

Your thoughts?

Ive been at these places, in my area, they've bought thousands of acres of farm land, they will be modern cities when finished, fully Gate guarded prison cities.

Yeah Infrastructure of close by cities , fully dominating, supplying what ever they need. No different than say oil pipe line cities.

This is a very typical one owned by Vantage. There are others like Equinox, the more recent one like Core Weave, then there are hyperscale cloud providers like AWS (Amazon), Google Cloud, Azure (Microsoft), Alibaba (small in the US), Tencent (also small in the US), Meta (internal only at least for now), and Oracle.

This is also how chip fabs look like from the outside, at least the ones in Taiwan that I have seen.

Nice! Vantage has beautiful buildings. As we,are building data centers residential developments continue to crop up on the immediate bordering properties. Nice homes too.

My electric bill is up 100% in the last 10 years with the biggest hikes in the last couple, and my gas delivery charges are also through the roof. They also suck up all the water, contribute absolutely nothing to the local economy, pen secretive deals with local utilities.... So no, I wish they'd all burn to the ground.
Yeah the building materials, are, very inert. So wild dreams

Yep, I checked out the water issue. Although they are typically closed loop, they need makeup water because of evaporative losses in their cooling towers.
I'm no physicist, but why can't the water be recaptured, maybe in some kind of a dome? at least partially? Someone probably would have thought of that by now if it made sense I figure.

I’m seeing some good chunks of farm & ranch land go to solar - but at least they can contribute to the masses …
I've heard some complaint about farm going solar "no solar on our farms" etc. I don't get it. If someone is paying to use your field, and you don't have to farm it anymore, considering the rent is sufficient, isn't it easier than farming? Like why bother?

Then you also have the problem of rural houses banding together to get all of their lands bundled together. It's like staging a home for sale, but to data center developers. You have a bunch of 3-4 acre homes on the outskirts of Loudon/Dulles all looking at $12M+ paydays. Don't want your house bundled? Fine, you get to live right next to a data center.
I'll take the $12MM and move lol.

Why can’t we get the Chinese to do their cheap version of AI?
Their versions are pretty cheap from what I understand. Manus is supposed to be a solid model. They have to work with less hardware so they are innovating around those constraints. Plus they've stolen and are likely actively stealing any and all tech they can.

One of the ranchers here switched to breeding stock only - so leased more than half his land to solar since they run dozens - not hundreds of head these days …
The wind farms here just coexist with cattle and crops …

Oh, one of the solar farms use sheep for lawn mowers ! They seem to be one animal that does not damage the kit - they just graze around it
Doubt they’d try goats !

I would much rather see a solar farm than a data center. You can hide them with berms, trees etc. You can also still farm certain crops while still using them. As far as wild life, they could easily adapt to them like they have as humans have encroached on their areas.

Goats will likely climb the panels somehow, would make for some great photos. Using sheep is a great idea too. Let them roam around. Getting under those panel to clear the weeds isn't doable on a large scale.

The goats might chew wire and dumb things they do …
There might be a goat shortage now anyway 😷
