So store brand like Supertech has a higher chance of cheating on API spec than say Mobil1? This does not make sense, Warren Distribution that makes Supertech has been in business for a long time and makes many private label oils, this would be bad for reputation. I do not see a connection of them wanting to cheat more than say Pennzoil/Mobil1 etc.

What I meant was if it’s coming direct from the manufacturer/supplier versus middle men. I.e bottled oil on a store shelf versus oil delivered in trucks and pumped into bulk tanks at quick lubes. The more hands the oil passes through the more likelihood in my mind of foul play.

I think what foxtrot was saying is some bulk suppliers mix in some of the non spec oil with the good oil to skim more profit (thousands of dollars) without anyone noticing. Then delivers the name brand oil to quick lubes, garages, etc. a garage placing an order is relying on the supplier to be honest. I don’t doubt fraud in this case happens from greedy suppliers who lack ethics. We’ve seen crooks return used oil to Walmart to save $20. Same idea of a crook is a distributor for oils and decides to play tricks and sell cheap oil at a higher price - more profit for them.

If you buy oil off the shelf at Walmart I think/Hope you have less risk. But until we see the offenders this is all speculation.

About 1500 variables that can never be isolated. Next time, it will be Providence giving better mileage, then Wolf’s Head… it’s all fake noise. There’s no difference over the lifetime of your engine.

My MPG went up 2.6mpg LTA when I installed QSFS 10W30 instead of 5W20 Castrol.
12.5:1 compression 2 litre DI Mazda/Ford engine.

Factors - It (almost) coincided with Spring and Winter/Summer blend Mayday changeover
but offset by 3 weeks. STFA rocketed up 3 mpg in the week after the oil install.

My engine is noisy, the 10W30 quieted it. Maybe less K sensor intrusion folded in there?

Is it possible they tested some counterfeit oils in foreign markets in Asia/Russia? Some of them got so good at counterfeiting that its almost impossible to tell the difference from the bottle

I for one am not particularly alarmed, for whatever reason. Without more specifics and actual details of what the irregularities actually are I'm going to sleep fine buying US or European oils which may include Warren products.

Of all the VOA and UOA here and PQIA reports in the past couple decades, I do not recall seeing anything overly concerning with well-known store brands and the majors.

I think the good news in all this is that the average age of vehicles on the road in the US is at an all time high so somehow we're continuing to make progress.

I was just going to say after reading this I'm worried my Corolla engine might not make it past 300k miles.

I guess the moral of the story is no matter what brand name oil it is, it has a limited use and shelf life period. Stretch out the OCI and it could be costly but I'm still not a 3K oil changer.

Honestly, that is made by Warren I believe. So, nothing wrong with it. Wouldn't pay $6.95 a quart though!

5-6k seems to be the ‘sweet spot’ that ‘most’ here agree on…
