Just curious here, a show of hands of anyone using a 50wt oil in their car/truck now.

My hand is raised, using M1 15w-50 in my old Saturn.

Conversely, using Pennzoil 5w-20 dino in the Vue.

What a sheer co-incidence, due to the extreme heat and paucity of rain this yer, I was looking for some single weight SAE 50 oil for my air cooled Honda genset, the Delo 15W-40 gets a bit thin when the genset does 7 hour duty in 40c heat, not a single place carries 50 oil anymore here in India, ended up getting Delo Silver SAE40 as the best alternative.

BTW, M-I 15W-50 is my favorite oil for gasoline engines, my Honda Accord V6 is still running strong after 500,000+ miles due to M-I from day one usage.

I'm currently using Castrol Syntec 5W50 in my Saab 9-5. It's regularly been going over 100 degrees since early July and I do lots of highway commuting. I can't think of a better time.

I also recently got 19 bottles of M1 15W50 SL VERY CHEAP.

Still using 20w-50 Castrol GTX in the TR3. My honda is getting 3 1/2 quarts of M1 EP 5w-30 and 1/2 quart of M1 EP 15w-50. Stuff has a great HT/HS rating.

I use 20w50 torco motorcycle with mpz in my car and truck.Keeps the old truck from burning oil.
No loss in mpg in the car acording to my scan gauge, compared to 5w-30

50 if i had a sportbike

Oh, I'm also using M1 V-Twin 20W-50 right now in my ZZR250, not quite a sportbike but good enough for my skills [lack thereof].

I can see where this is heading.

I have not heard of 50 WT oil for so long that I don't even think about it anymore. As far as I know 60 WT or perhaps even 70 WT oil is still used in Top Fuel (Nitro burning) drag racing cars. Redline for example still makes a 60 WT synthetic racing oil as far as I know.

15W-40, 15W-50, 20W-50 oils replaced 50 WT oil a long time ago in auto racing. Heck, there is a 10W-60 oil used in some auto racing. 15W-40 oil is still used a lot in diesel engines a lot.

I don't even see Mobil 1 15W-50 anymore at Wal-Mart. When it comes to gasoline engines it is almost all 0W-30, 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30 nowadays. Even in auto racing (except for Top Fuel) they are trying to use the thinnest oils they can and still have protection. They use a very thin oil for qualifying and then a somewhat thicker oil for the actual race. The thickest oil they use in most auto racing is probably 20W-50. I have not seen a 50 WT oil container in years.

I recently used 20W-50 for the first time in my 98 Escort ZX2 because of the high miles (172K) plus the heat of summer. This triggered a P0340 code (cam sensor). Switching back to 5W-30 solved the problem. It seems the Variable Cam Timing mechanism operates sluggishly with heavy oil and 20W-50 is completely inappropriate for the 2.0L Duratec engine. This is the first time I was able to fix a problem with an oil change!

I didn't think they were utilizing variable cam technology in those cars back then?

It's probably not the variable cam technology you're thinking of. The VCT solenoid controls timing of the exhaust cam, not the intake. This is to provide more overlap so it can handle exhaust gases same as an egr valve would.

Gurkha,

What about 20W-50? I recall it was widely available all over India just a few years ago. As for a straight 50, you might try "the posh Khan Market" if you're in Delhi, although it might cost an arm and a leg.

Cheers, Mark
