Hello everyone,

I have an old 99 GM/Opel Vectra b w/ 110k miles that has a 4cyl 8v 2.2l (C22NE engine, same found in some Isuzu and 2.4l variation in old S10s) - Manual calls for API SJ or higher 5w30 or 15w40 or 20w50.

I was using good synthetic 10w40 castrol but noticed it was burning way too much, having to add half a qt every 500miles or so (I like to push/high rev the thing in the highway) ...

Switched to 20w50 mineral and has been running great so far, after 1500 miles still at level range were before on 10w40 would need a qt at this point, so I guess its normal now or burning very little as expected.

I would like to use a semi-synthetic tough, to extend oil changes intervals a bit, but I cant find any semi-synthetic option in this 50wt, I did found some 10w50 and 15w50 but they are branded as motorcycle...

Do you have any recommendations? btw I am currently in South America and weather is really hot 99% of the time here, so I am really looking for a better oil not worried about low temp performance.

Thanks!

Those Isuzu engines tend to be oil burners. Not much you can do except keep feeding it oil. In hot weather, 20w-50 is fine. Keep checking it, though, as oil use can sneak up on you and run you too low.

Can you find this?

Motorcycle oil will work just fine, but valvoline 20W-50 is available in synthetic aswell. Maybe not in south america, but contact a Valvoline dealer

the last Opel we had was in 1958, in Chattanooga tn,,,did not know any were still around...it ran 0k in 1958, I was 12 then....

Walmart has Mobil1 15w50 full synthetic:

Not sure if it is available in South America or not. It is not a motorcycle oil.

Thanks guys, I guess my issue is the current market here they only sell 20w50 mineral everywhere, since manual states 5w30 and 15w40 can be used, people who want semi-synthetic usually go this route and call it a day...

I will look out for those, researching more I found this Motul 4100 here, seems good w euro specs but is also really, really overpriced...

I used to have an old s10 for a short while with that engine series in mexico. They'll run forever on whatever oil as long as it's topped up and i used to use 20w-50 even though it barely burned with 10w-30.

Just keep using whatever cheap 20w-50 grade. You could use that motorcycle oil but i wouldn't waste money on putting anything better than it. That 20w-50 is already much better than whatever 90's 5w-30 it was spec'd for. So what country and general area are you in right now.

@01_325ci I'd give Mystik JT8 15W50 a try if you only drive it in warmer conditions. It is a HDEO semi synthetic and readily available at Farm stores like Farm & Fleet. It is currently on sale for $70 and has a $20 rebate, so $50 for 5 gallons. Pretty good deal IMO.

Mystik JT8 15w50

Just my $0.02

That engine doesn’t need ‘fancy’ semi-synthetic oil, just feed it the cheapest 20W-50 you can find and keep it topped off.
I had one for years, they are a tough little motor.

Hello @01_325ci , your engine is similar to mine and we are at the same region.

Like you can see in my signature, i use HDEO 15W40, preferable SL/CI-4/E7. I do this because i don't like the quality of the normal 20W50 or PCMO 15W40, they fall in the lowest quality oils category around here. The HDEO gives you the best quality 15W40 we can find at our region.

Your engine is a bit newer than mine, it even says that 5W30 can be used. If you didn't had any oil consumption problems i would recommend 5W40 A3/B4, since they are great oils with great approvals and you can find it at the same price of the HDEO that i mentioned.

I was going to give a try to the Motul 15W50, but that thing is too thick!

Some HDEO i have used> Shell Rimula / Lubrax Top Turbo / Castrol CRB turbomax (currently using). I change the oil every 6 months and i have zero oil consumption.

I like Rimula R4X 15W40, available here in Europe too, old school SL/CI-4 HDEO.
