  • How many tons is this heat pump?
  • What do you set the t-stat on during Summer? Winter?
  • How hot does it get in E. Tenn. during the Summer?
  • Single or multi-story house?

Something is severely out-of-whack with your numbers.....4500 kWhrs for a 1600 sqr. ft. house during the Summer? I drive a 1450 sqr. ft house with a 26yr old 3-ton Janitrol heat pump in humid, HOT Central Tx. and use about 1200 kWhrs during the Summer. In March/April I use about 621 kWhrs. How do you use 275% more kWhrs in the Summer than I do???

  • Your HP doesn't run much at all during the Spring, but you still use around 1000 kWhrs?? On what? Something is FUBAR....

I'm not sure.

What do you set the t-stat on during Summer? Winter?

Depends on my wife...

How hot does it get in E. Tenn. during the Summer?

On average between 85 and 95 degrees. In the winter averages between 25/45 but varies can vary quite a bit. 25 degrees and dry one night and 60 degrees and rain the next.

Single or multi-story house?

Upstairs is 1600 square foot, little less than half of the basement is my den which is underground.

You are right! In 2000, my electric bill was $79 a month. Now it's around $220. So what has changed? For starters I got married so my electric bill went up. My wife does not work outside the house. So half the time I was either at work or in my garage. When I was single, I set my thermostat to 75F and left it. I had these white Venetian blinds that would restrict light but would not make the room so dark it was gloomy. That kept the house cooler I thought. Those are gone. I used my enclosed carport as a storage room. Now it's our living room. It has lots of windows that let in heat.

My wife also raises small birds in the basement. So we have a 5000 watt barrel heater that keeps the basement at around 85F year round. She wants me to build a 10X10 room inside the basement for her bird room and I think I'm going to do it because that's that much less space to heat in the middle of summer and winter.

I can't upload any photos from work due to filters but I pulled up my kilowatt usage. That particular month that the usage was over 4000 Kilowatts, I remember the high never got above freezing for three straight weeks.

For some odd reason, this year the kilowatt usage seems more consistence from month to month.

Here is a breakdown:

March: 3057
April: 2700
May: 2921
June: 2604
July: 2838
August: 3029
September: 3033
October: 2303
November: 2900

November 2015: 1666

The only explanation for the difference between this November and last November was she did not have any birds in the basement. I think that barrel heater is using allot of energy.

This summer I did allot of work on the house. I sealed the cracks around the windows have they separated from the brick and insulated around the doors. So far it doesn't seem like it's done much good.
