My wife's 2019 VW Atlas has had a bit of issues lately. A miss fire code came up (random across a few cylinders) and I realized we were over-due for coil and plug replacement. Most looked fine, but cylinder 5 was getting some water in the coil area because the outside of the plug and coil were crusty with white build-up. The coil and plug replacement went well. Got the parts from FCP Euro, ATP coils and NGK plugs. Probably the easiest plug replacement I've ever done. Did an oil change with Amsoil 0w-30 Euro and a factory element filter at the same time.

However, when I filled it up with gas after, the tank vent didn't seem to be working. A day later the MIL came on with the EVAP Purge Flow fault (I forgot to write the code down). Clearly its a vent issue, I just need to track it down. If anyone is familiar with these and has any tips, it would be much appreciated. FCP Euro had a bunch of parts (EVAP canister filter, canister, hose and purge valve) for reasonable money, so in effort to save time, I loaded the parts cannon. I did pull up a VW Tech Tip (not a Tech Bulletin according to VW) and it points to a bunch of these parts as possible causes of the MIL. I'm wondering if I simply knocked a wire off of the purge valve. When I pulled the #6 coil, it did get away from me and go clattering down the back of the engine.

Another maintenance item I'm going to tackle before winter is the front brakes. I put a set of Powerstop rotors and pads in the back and they have been great. The front rotors need to be replaced, primarily due to the significant rust in the vented center. I've never seen a rotor rot from the inside out, but theses are. I have ordered ATE rotors and EBC Greenstuff pads, also from FCP. I'm going to bleed the brakes while I'm there. Will report back on the performance once I install these.

These things are plagued with evap issues.

If you are firing up the parts cannon probably start with a purge valve. That said it’s not uncommon for the guys at my local dealer to put tanks in these.

Thank you sir, that's my plan. I'll have time this Sunday to dive in. First item is to locate the purge valve, see if I damaged anything during the coil removal, and probably replace it. I hope I don't have to replace the fuel tank. Ugh

Still had a stumble, a random misfire code, misfire on Cylinder 1 and 2, and misfire within the first 1000 revolutions of the engine.

So I started with the purge valve and hoses on the engine side. These came as a kit from FCP Euro. I reset the codes and filled the tank. The tank still did not vent properly (clicked the nozzle off early) but seemed a bit better. The car ran fine and the codes did not come back.

Saturday I decided to replace the EVAP canister because 1) I had it in hand and 2) it was still not venting properly. The canister is located the passenger side rear wheel well. not difficult to get too, but it would be nice to have extra small hands. I had to get creative withe a screwdriver to release the top clip that holds it in place. Kudos to VW for easy hose connections though. They designed this whole system to be easily replaced. Hmmm?? I wonder why?

I filled it up and the canister worked great. Filled with no problem. No codes, and the car is driving great. Next project is the brakes.
