It can give you stomach cramps and is known to be tough to take for some.
If that is the case take it with Omega 3 fish oil and that solves that problem.
It works but try to find it without fillers and you can also try Beta-Sitosterol instead- read up on it.

You could just have an enlarged belly which puts extra pressure on the bladder. Then people think they have an enlarged prostate since it sounds better. Start walking every day and lose some weight. Go low carb. A guy at work is like this always going to the bathroom and he says it's an enlarged prostate. Meanwhile I'm looking at a belly that looks 9 months pregnant.

Oh , so the fish oil kinds smoothes things out in the tummy I suppose by lubricating and lipids.

It has been confirmed as benign enlarged prostate at just over 40. But good point yes for belly fat.

According to Wikipedia, the latest research indicates saw palmetto is ineffective and Beta-Sitosterol, which is similar in structure to cholesterol, may increase cardiovascular problems. I have no first hand experience with either of these, but a lot of supplement "science" is anything but. Source and impurities can also be of concern, as this stuff isn't regulated. Proceed with caution.

That is taken out of context a bit. Although I have no dog in the hunt........

Sitosterolemia, a rare inherited fat storage disease: People with this condition have too much beta-sitosterol and related fats in their system. They are prone to early heart disease. Taking beta-sitosterol makes this condition worse. Don’t take beta-sitosterol if you have sitosterolemia.

Life is so much easier taking a simple finasteride pill every morning.
I tried to make supplements work for a long while and got no relief.
These are proven drugs for BPH and for most men have very tolerable, if any, side effects.
By the way, fish oil supplements have been shown to possibly enlarge the prostate on their own.
Good luck. See your doctor.

Loose all the extra weight and eat healthy. Then you can throw out all the supplements and other such garbage. The only side effect you need to worry about is feeling great everyday.

Follow the book "Protein Power" - it's cheap on Amazon - Dr Eads. Many health issues will go away following that regimen and it's not that hard.

Hi,

Always see your Doctor first.

In my case (I'm nearly 60 now) it works great, I take 160mg gelpill morning and agian at dinner time.

Not all Saw Palmetto by various makers are the same, often they have other stuff in there, look for 160mg Saw palmetto as the key ingrediant, if directions say take 4 to 6 a day, then the actual dose is much to small and is full of other stuff.

Once you find a brand that works for you, stick with it. Fancy brands I looked at were not as good.

Saw Palm has been around a long time effectiveness is moderate but noticeable, use it in good health. The 160mg standardized extract twice a day seems to be the preferred supplement. As others mentioned, higher priced doesn't necessarily mean better, the Walmart brand 160mg was tested recently to be as advertised.

Same goes for Beta-Sisterol, perfectly safe.

One can test the results themselves. Try one or both for a while then stop and see what happens.

See your Doc.

OP said it was confirmed as BPH, so it sounds like he has seen a doctor.

Same here for 15 years.

If you're interested in taking a natural formula to see if it works before using finasteride or dutasteride, I'd look for a formula containing as many of the following as possible. All have scientific studies backing their varying degrees of effectiveness with BPH and prostatitus:

Saw Palmetto (320 mg/day)
Beta-Sitasterol
Stinging Nettle Root(some studies show it helps symptoms AND works to shrink the prostate)
Pygeum Africanum (activity seems to help w/remaining urine in bladder)
Pumpkin Seed (reduction in serum PSA in several studies )
Flaxseed (converts to enterolactone in the intestine which helps symptoms)
Lycopene (slows rate of PSA rise)
Boron 3mg (blocks growth factors in PSA)

In most cases, these studies showed that a BPH regimen like this is more effective with multiple ingredients than just taking saw palmetto alone. I have BPH and I've been helped by taking these ingredients from a prostate formula I bought in a health food store. I don't have the quality of life issues involving getting up at night, etc. so your results might differ. If there's no relief then I think Avodart and Proscar are well tolerated in most people without many side effects. I only like to take prescription drugs unless I absolutely have to...so it's not an issue of what's easier or harder. YMMV.

It sounds like you've been to the doctor and had a PSA test already.

One thing I have learned over the passed year is not to eat anything sweet or that's heavy in starch after about 4:00 in the afternoon. Other wise I'm up 5-6 time a night. I've been taking a a product called palmetoplex by Standard Process. It seems to be helping but it takes awhile.
