Any cheap / free ideas to cool a garage?

All that cool air being pulled in, needs a place to go, and it sounds like it's going straight up and out the roof.

Doesn't make sense though. The cooler damp air should be heavier that the hot air at the ceiling and that should go out the vent first.

You're right about the rest. You direct where you want the cool air to go with open windows.

Has anyone suggested moving?
Not happening. This is the inherited family homestead.

I had a whole house fan would pull air into the house and exhaust into the attic came with the house when I purchased it. A year later I had central air installed removed the attic fan and repaired the ceiling. I then installed it at the peak of the attached garage wall side so it exhausted out of the gable vent which I enlarged. Exhaust the hot air out with a nice constant breeze. My garage is my shop it's tight but all I have. I noticed if I just open the bottom of the door about a foot nice up flow breeze the more you open less of a breeze.

Correct, the only benefit of a fan is if it blows on you, allowing your perspiration to evaporate faster and providing a cooling affect to your body.

The only way to get below ambient is some sort of mechanical cooler whether it be DX or evaporation.
Then how do you explain wind chill?

I meant from your personal fan situation in the breezeway, I believe you found an excellent resolution to cooling off!

A couple or four decent Amazon fans, a couple thermostats switches at least to pull out the highest hottest air won’t be that expensive

Heat rejecting window tint if you garage has windows, or solar screens. Out side of that, you need an A/C to really make a difference. If you have a small window, install a window unit. Keep it separate from your central HVAC

I tried this one. Supposed to cool 4x the size of the garage and it won't do anything. I put it in our bedroom window and it's still not a good cooler at all

I have 2 of these, (only use 1 at a time) but the 5900cfm versions. Love them.

But your building has massive heatsoak, and it takes a lot of time for something to cool a building, you need to start it the night before minimum before you work on something. 1 whirlybird may not be enough ventilation.

And an open garage door is what makes this a fart in a windstorm. Clear out enough room so you can pull a vehicle in the night before and close the door.

Then how do you explain wind chill?
Different - sort of.

In the heat you perspire. When water turns to vapor it uses heat energy, creating a temporary cooling affect. This is what your feeling when you blow ambient air across your skin in the heat - the water/vapor extracting heat.

When its really cold your body temp is much higher than ambient, and it radiates heat - sort of providing a warm insulative layer of air around your skin. In the wind this layer gets moved away much more quickly, and hence your skin is directly exposed to this cold air, making it feel even colder.

I walk outside. Mid day it might be 95 with 50% humidity, and while that might be nasty, in the morning when its 74 and 100% humidity its worse. 100% humidity means no evaporative cooling, and its awful.
