hey guys.

i see lots of talk from users who are looking for over sized oil filters to fit their applications etc...

what exactly are the benefits in running a larger filter? is it just more filtration?

what negative effects does running a larger than recommended oil filter? reduced oil pressure or flow?

currently my Honda uses a fram ph3895 oil filter. fram makes a filter that is MUCH larger the ph3985 with the same threads and gasket mating surface. (I'm only using fram as a reference since they are easy to find around here. i can cross reference the filters to other brands)

its about 25-35% larger in physical size. so it should have that much more filtration?

What kind of Honda do you have ?

I like oversized oil filters for our 06 Accord and 07 Civic. I feel more comfortable doing 20K oil filter change intervals with a filter that is almost twice the size of the standard oil filter which looks like an aspirin bottle.

I have an ea026 filter on my saab which gave me 2 extra liters in the sump. I did it
For
Slighty increased drain intervals, more oil at track events and peace of mind with a sludge prone engine. I will have a uoa in a couple months.

larger filter area = less pressure drop. even if area is the same, you still have a larger capacity of oil.

so with the larger filter i should see a pressure increase is what you are saying?

sounds like a good upgrade for my next oil change then.

for anyone who cares its a 2.0L Honda engine modified with a B16 VTEC cylinder head. turbocharged. producing about 400+hp to the wheels.

it has a ported/modified oil pump that pushes a solid 75-85psi of oil pressure. 90-95psi is when the relief valve opens.

I'm sure i can benefit from the larger oil filter so that will be on my list next.

Very interesting, I've always used the 3593A size on my Acura (with the Honda B18) but I've considered dabbling with an oversized filter. Filtration is my biggest concern.

I always used a Mobil 1 filter, but lately have been using Nissan OEM filters (they`re quite a bit bigger and heavier than the M1 filters). I wonder which one is actually better?

If the filter is mounted such that oil can drain out of it when the engine is off, and the ADBV is less than perfect, then a larger filter can take longer to refill, prolonging oil starvation on cold starts.

Have you ever removed an oil filter that was not full of oil when doing an oil change?

which oem nissan? i'm using the m1-110 filter, its a bit taller than the m1-108 that is spec'd.

i'm also going to try running the m1-104, its wider and taller that the m1-108, but has the same gasket mating surface.

and i'm also going to try the m1-207. its got the right threads but the gasket is a little wider. the filter its self is a very good size. i hope this one will work, if not the m1-104 should be sufficient.

Do you have the wix equivalent number and/or the Amsoil EAo equivalent number for the M1-104?

I should use the M1-108 size but I am using the M1-110 right now as it is longer and, by chance, it is the same for the Civic (less inventory).

It could be interesting to switch both cars to bigger oil filters (still have to look at the space available).

There's a few inverted Asian designs that empty completely. I somehow think it was a Toyota (trying to remember). Sits right up front on the engine. Easy reach. Just spin it off.

m1-104 fits great. i literally just put it on. its wix number 51334 per their site look up. definitely more heft to it vs. the m1-110.
