Another oil question

For those concerned, I would just use a good 30 grade or add a qt of 15w50 to bump up the viscosity a bit.

So when it's all said and done, wouldnt the perfect oil be as thin as posible, pump easier with the strong film strength & high temp stability of a SAE30 be ideal?

I think so. And I'll gladly spring the extra $$ for a fluid that can live up to said expectations. Enter Polyol Esters :) High flow, shear stability, high temperature resistance? Sign me up.

Thanks HayBus. Nice to know someone is reading my dribble.

Well Max, you're preaching to the choir - I have a long time fondness for polyol esters

but the type and quantity of POE is important. If they are too thin, too polar, or too much, then there could be some issues with seals and additive response. Now a 60+% blend of the right POEs with the right PAOs with the right additives may very well approach ideal. But the price would be high and the volume low, which makes the development costs a bit tough to swallow, especially in a price sensitive PCMO market. However, in a cost sensitive market like commercial fleets, there could very well be an opportunity.

I've used the search read 100's of posts of 20 weight oil vs 30 weight oil etc. I've read about CAFE, and a lot of opinions for and against the thick vs thin oil.

Now my question: Why would an engine from 2005 that called for a 5w30 oil use a 5W-20 oil in 2007? I went so far as to see if they redesigned the engine, used a different pump, or crank, and all I could find was a different PCV valve or an EGR upgrade.

Does the engine builder think that the 5W-20 oil is now better? Is it CAFE? Are they trying to boost 5W-20 oil sales? I would like to think the mfg has my best interests at heart?

Any engineers or oil experts that can answer this?

Mainly done for CAFE standards. There are some vehicles where it has a mechanical reason too such as the Dodge 5.7L HEMI with MDS. The MDS requires a 20 weight oil for proper operation even though same year 5.7L HEMI engines wiithout MDS, and all previous year engines before MDS came out, call for 30 weight. CAFE mainly however.
