Amsoil XL vs. SAE

What is the oil change interval listed in your manual?
If you want to do up to 7500 severe/normal miles for up to 6 months, go with the XL.
If you want to do up to 15,000 severe or 25,000 normal miles up to 1 year, and change the oil filter at the recommended interval in your owners manual, go with the ATM. This is what I would do.

I will be changing the oil every 6-7.5K. I guess the XL would be the economical choice. Is the extra $7.50 in oil worth it to use the ATM????

Does Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic make more sense.

I don't think so. Nothing really wrong with Valvoline, but it's not really a long drain oil. I'm not sure what the Valvoline warranty is, I went looking for it and couldn't find it.

My car (Volvo 850) has essentially the same engine - my advice? Use Amsoil 5W-40 or Amsoil 10W-40 and do a 10-15K mile oil change interval. If you want to go with a 30, use the ATM 10w30, 10-15K mile oil change interval.

Amsoil AFL 5W-40

Amsoil AMO 10W-40

Amsoil ATM 10w30

I'm not trying to steer you away from Amsoil, but Valvoline is capable of 6-7k miles drains. Any SM oil should be able to do 5k miles.

Pablo, Thanks for the advice.

My routine is to change the oil/filter every 6-7.5K with a filter only change and top off in between (3-4K). The only reason I was considering the Maxlife was due to engine mileage. No leaks at present just thinking prevention(seal conditioning, etc...).

Also, the owners manual suggests 5w30 or 10w30 depending on temp/weather. What is you thinking on the 40's you suggested?

I responded in the other thread. I would say no need to change filter midstream.

Right now I'm approaching 10K miles, 13 months on my 850 OCI (110,000 miles total). I'm using Amsoil SAE (10W)-30 ACD HD Diesel in that one, and have used Amsoil 5w30 ASL in the past (20K OCI) - but usually do 10K intervals, depending on how many miles I get in one year. I've gone over a year this time, because I messed up my neck and don't feel comfortable changing oil right now. I'm not particularly worried. Soon I will change it, though.

Anyhow - I'm not sure what oil I will use this time. I always use a different Amsoil. I may even try the HDD 5w30 or AME 15w40.

On the topic of the XW-40 I would never use a 15w40 conventional, especially in winter. It's interesting that my manual calls out 15w40 as acceptable. Over the years, the XW-40's have just run quieter, but in reality I can't say the UOA's are any different.

In Georgia, midsummer I lean toward an XW-40. But if you feel more comfortable following the manual, then a good 10w30 will be perfectly fine.

10w-30 ATM would get my vote. Haven't seen enough UOA's with the 10w-40. With Amsoil it's a bit different bc all their oils use different chemistry where as M1/RL are pretty much the same throughout for the most part.

I am conviced to try the amsoil ATM 10w30 with a 10k interval. My only concern is the filter. Amsoil does not make a cartridge filter for my '02 Volvo s60. What brand filter would you suggest for a 10k interval?

A Wix filter would be good for 10,000 miles.

I have a napa gold 1356 which is essentially a rebadged wix 51356. I threw away my last one at 2500 km. This time, I will keep it much longer... perhaps for two ocis.
