I changed the oil on my 21 escape today and wondered..why does the engine idle so smooth and quiet after the change? I only go about 8,000 miles on amsoil xl and it says you can go much farther. Does the louder sound me the oil needs to be changed sooner? Just an observation I had.

The louder sound is telling you that you need to use another oil. How does the car sound when it is warmed up? Is this engine a DI Engine?

Sounds the same warm. Nice and quiet and smooth after the change. I've been using this oil for 100,000 miles it always does this. Wondered why. I appreciate the feedback. Yes is direct injection.

Like Zee09 said, if you want to keep using the oil you are using maybe back off the OCI, maybe keep it at 5000 miles and get a UOA to look at TBN or fuel dilution. I do not have a GDI Engine, but if you are having fuel dilution issues you may need to see if a different oil, meaning Amsoil SS versus Amsoil XL, which you are using will make a difference.

If you have already gotten rid of your old oil, go ahead on this OCI and pull a sample at 5000 miles, get a sample and post the results.

Mainly because it is cold. Even room temperature is cold. Also possibly not diluted with fuel.

IMO the number 1 reason why people proclaim one oil quieter than another is because they are comparing it cold to warm.
I’ve tried several different oils in my B58 and there’s definitely more than a placebo or it’s being cold effect. Adding liquid moly MoS2 to my 227k mile pickup took all of five minutes to notice and that was at temp when I poured it in. Switching to Red Line from QS Euro after only 3k miles made my b58 quieter and after about half a tank of driving with Motorkote in it it sounds and acts completely different than it did on the stock 0w20 it came with. Went from sounding like a small tractor to just humming along.

You think he’s wrong and unless he can prove it to you by going through the pains of getting recordings he can’t be correct? Ears are data.
That’s nowhere near close to reality. Out of all the senses, sound perception is one of the most nebulous. It’s very, very difficult to obtain accurate sound pressure measurements even in a proper lab. Throw a human in the mix and it’s exponentially more subjective.

A running engine is a dynamic environment with many moving variables.

@mrjlube
I'm curious to know why you think it sounds smoother and quieter. Do you have any quantitative data to support your claim?

Just my $0.02
You can't hear a difference sometimes? You can't feel any difference sometimes?
I guess mrjlube and myself are just more sensitive to these things than you and its not because we are both Michiganders.
We are all different creatures and none of us have the same identical abilities or the same identical six senses.

While some argue we have 33 senses. Six are the major ones - last being a range of various ESPs.

Is that it.

Shearing? My 24 has hpl premium plus 0w20, setting @ 7k and sounds like it needs changed. Rough winter, lots of idling and short tripped 50% of the time. I’m not looking for level 5 status by running oil 38k miles. I just wanna feed my cars the best and keep the engine clean.

In my 50 years, I've experienced the same thing on all of my vehicles and many brands of oil with varying intensity. Many people I know do not notice any difference, My wife is typically one of those people.

That is until recently. At the thought of using the latest oil of choice here on BITOG and because I was changing the oil anyway, I changed my truck over to to VRP. Same weight as always, 5w-30. The initial smoothness and power were astounding. The start-up was also noticeably quieter, enough so that my wife asked without provocation, if had done something to my truck. A couple hundred miles later on the same oil, she asked me again: "Did you mess something up? You truck is loud again."

My guess is that oils shear to a certain degree and lose a little cushion that better absorbs sound and vibration. Some people are more sensitive to the sound and vibration.

It would certainly be interesting to compare the cold and hot viscosities of old vs new.

You just have to learn to ignore the sound. Sometimes my truck sounds like a kitty, sometimes it sounds like it's about to grenade. 🤷🏼

I’d say that’s unlikely with that oil. More like fuel dilution given your description of the operating conditions.

No doubt. I’m sure in your neck of the woods you deal with the same thing. I’m just waiting till the weather warms to get some new oil in and I’ll run it the whole summer. I probably should have used something cheaper for a winter run.
