Hi Everyone:

Kinda new here and looking for everyone opinion/experience.

I have a '06 Hyundai Santa Fe with just over 130,000KM (81k miles).

I have always used synthetic in it. (Mobil-1 for the first 80,000) Switched because of high FE numbers.

I currently use Amsoil 10w30 in the summer and 5w30/0w30 in the winter depending how cold it is. I put on a lot of miles per month, mostly highway (4,000km).

I sent my oil in for analysis and it came back with higher than virgin sample or Silicon & Sodium. There was no presence of anti-freeze though so I'm kinda stumped. (Question 1)

I can only use the Factory Air Filter as it's a really weird design.

Question 2 - Do you think I could use PP and go (10,000KM) on a single change (6250 miles)?

Thanks...

1- Yes it is fine to use Amsoil. It is very good.

I would use a 5w30 for your car all year around.

2- You can use PP, save some money, and VERY easily go to 6250 miles!

Both oils are great.

Out of the two, I would lean to the PP.

Why would you lean to the PP? Just curious... I want to squeeze as many miles out of this car as possible as the mileage my works pays isn't great.

Also isn't PP a grp III and Amsoil a grp IV?

Thanks for your input! :)

You may see weird things on a UOA after you change oils. Whatever oil you use, use it for 3-5 changes, then get a UOA to see where you stand.

Also- Since its a 06, are you still under warranty?

If so: If something goes bad with the engine, the car maker may want to see proof it had oil changes done at the factory recommended change interval. So while its in warranty you may want to stick to that.

*Useing those oils for longer OCIs will not damage the engine. Just in the highly unlikely event of the motor taking a carp for another reason, or a defect with the motor itself.

This vehicle is no longer under warranty. In Canada the warranty is 5 Years or 100,000km. So in the first 80K I was using Mobil 1 and changing every 6K as the manual requires. I also used it because it was API certified. Then I switched to Amsoil SSO for 5 changes before sending in my sample. Still don't know why these numbers were so high. I baby the car, and do all the maintenance well before it needs to be done. Father is a mechanic of 35 years!

Could care less about Fuel Economy (althought it's a benefit), just worried that my Engine won't give me the 500,000KM I'm looking for.

It depends on what Amsoil you are useing.

PP would be cheaper. And PP has proved it self to be a "top shelf" (if you will) oil with its countless UOAs on here.

PP is a great oil, as is Amsoil.

Either one will work great. The main subject when it comes down to these two are not of quality, because both are great. It is how much you want to pay.

Some like to save a little, some(like me) do not care about price.
I use $10 a bottle Redline!!!

I use Amsoil because I believe in their product and it has returned exceptionally good wear numbers compared to the Mobil stuff, with exception of the Sodium (which I don't think is harmful), and Silicon. My engine does good on gas and the spark plugs when changed were spotlessly clean. The SMOG test showed the engine was running very clean, almost all zeros on the report. I just wanted everyones opinion of what seems to be the best for my situation.

So to recap, I want 500,000K out of this engine (2.7 V6), and I would like to use a quality oil to achieve it no matter the cost.

Thanks

Considering both of my vehicles are bathing in Amsoil ASL, I'll chime in. It's a PITA to get Amsoil. I hate the order process, wait, shipping, etc, etc. They're nice and all with good customer service, but it just bugs me. Plus, it's expensive. Even at the prefered customer rate. Adding shipping costs kills the price again. A good $2+ per quart more than off the shelf PP. And at 6250 OCIs, you'd never know the difference. Use PP and save the extra money. My humble opinion...

I change it every 10,000K (6,250 Miles), because I feel that this is long enough. I also use an Amsoil EAO Oil Filter. The Oil is usually very clean on the dipstick when I drain it. I know this is probably a waste, but my car makes me money, so the longer I can run it without sludge/break downs the better I am.

Anyone: Any Idea why the Silicon & Sodium numbers would be so high without a Coolant leak and a clean factory cotton air-filter?

Thanks,

In Canada Amsoil is just a bit more per quart that Mobil-1 which is the most expensive off the shelf. I also live close to their Canadian Distribution center so I can walk in and purchase it there... They are really nice and have really good customer service.

I'm also using their new Synthetic Power Steering fluid and it really made a difference in the pumps whining and the systems smoothness... Just thought I would let everyone know that it works good!

If you like the Amsoil products and can walk in to the warehouse there and buy it, I would stick with the Amsoil. I would also use either the SSO 0w30 or the ASL 5w30 year round.

Can you post the information on the UOA that you have. It would be interesting to see all of the numbers.

Na and Si - Have you posted your UOA for review in in the UOA section? I would say monitor the situation - but without knowing the numbers, hard to comment. Typically these elements (if high) have little to do with the oil - with the exception of Na bearing oils (Not SSO) and up to 10 ppm Si in most all oils as an antifoam agent. Si can have many other sources.

SSO vs. PP - If you are doing less the 8K miles, SSO is probably not worth it. 10K and above for sure. Post your UOA and let's have a look.

I will post the UOA once I find it again... It's somewhere on a pile on my desk...

I appreciate everyone input.

I was thinking of using PP for a couple of changes and doing UOA on it to see how the numbers stack up against the ASL/SSO I was using. Would be interesting...

Johnny, you used to work for Penzoil?

Yes I did. Retired in October of 2005.

Johnny, Great to be able to pick your brain! :)

So I take it you use PP then? hehehe How long have you been using the products?

I've been using some form of Pennzoil synthetic oil since 1988. I have two Hondas and a Jeep. I use Pennzoil synthetic in the two vehicles that I have control over. The Honda my son has at college has Amsoil 0W-20 in it. I did that because it's usually 10-13K before I can get my hands on it to service it. I change the Platinum on the wife's Honda and my Jeep at 6K.

What kind of miles do you get out of your vehicles? Also do you think I can get 500K out of my truck using PP at every 6250mi changes (10,000KM)?
