Amsoil or Mobil 1

My local Checker sells M1 for $6.49 plus tax, nearly $7 per quart.

I wouldn't buy it there though. Wal-Mart 5qts for a little over $20, or Costco six quart case for $25 or so.

But why do that when I can buy 4qts Havoline for $8.12 or right around $1.60/qt or Delo for a little more, not have to chase sales and have second-to-none performance for a regular drain?

The 3100 is a legendary slapper. At one time GM was fixing them. Then they decided it was "normal". I've not heard of many suffering severe damage from it. But the service pistons did have teflon pads on the lower skirts. Otherwise, the 3100 is as tough as dirt and will run forever on practically anything.

But the way you were talking, I thought this was a 'vette or some other higher end model.

Unless this is a family heirloom or some unique production example, I'd just run a heavier conventional and pocket the difference.

Conventional or syntehtic 10w40 should be safe to run right? I know it did get rid of the slap, however I want to make sure its safe to run on a continual basis

If you are not seeing an extended period of really cold temps a Delo 15w40 or a 50/50 mix of 15w40 & 10w30 OR -40 Chevron Supreme might be the best of both worlds, IMHO.

Cheers!

Haccofficer when I was reseaching Amsoil product I came across Msparks a site supporter. He offered BITOG discount and gave me a great deal on some Amsoil ATF transmission fluid. Shipping was fast and service was great. I'm not sure if Pablo offers discount if not Msparks does here his site www.lube-direct.com

I use shorter OCI and oil testing on my 3100 GMV6
since I regard their intake leaking a greater
risk to the motor than what added protection I can get with syn or syn run for long OCI.

Once you've done the newer GM gaskets and torque settings for the intake gasket, then I'd consider long OCI. I have the same car without the slap so I have M1 5-30 but I use a 5000 OCI/test. I'd see what 5-40 shell rotella t
does if you want to stay syn since its less than M1 at Walmart.

I just looked and saw you have done the super intake fix - i'd use a 40W for your slap but I'd try 5-30 or 10-30HM or 5-30 or 10-30 with VSOT too if I had some to use up and this is your only car.

Thanks for the FelPro recommendation from your other post on intake gaskets.

I was wondering which Amsoil you were comparing to. The XL product would serve you well if you are running less than 10K drain intervals. Price is ver comparable to Mobil 1. That's even shipped to your door. Plus your helping out a sponsor.

But in all honesty, it really doesnt' matter which one you go with. Either one is heads above non-synthetics on the market.
