First post here for me but I have been reading the forums for about a year or so. Anyway, I have been doing my own oil for about 20 years and have been using amsoil off and on for the last 8 years. I have only used their top end oil in the past and have found their oil to be high quality, but a bit pricey and is probably more than what I need now. I don't drive as much as I did in the past, and I like to change my oil twice a year so an oil with an extended drain is not required, but I still want a high quality oil. My question is how does the new OE oil stack up against other oils in it's price range such as PP or M1 etc..
I am driving about 6,000 miles in a 6 month period, but I would call it severe service because of the frequent short trips and living in a damp cold environment during the winter. The rest of the year is mainly pavement but in the fall I am in the woods for two months during hunting season. I also do some towing now and then. I have mainly been using PP for the past couple of years but on a recent trip into my local Napa I saw the OE on the shelf for $5.50 a litre. Seems like a pretty good deal when you consider the regular amsoil is $14.00 a litre and a 4.7 l jug of PP goes for $38.00. I'm thinking it will work just as well or better then the PP, and is a bit cheaper. Seems hard to beat!

AMsoil OE is basically the old XL 7500. It is a good lube and if you save a few bucks, I would say it is a go. Normally I would say the opposite ie. don't skimp but I think OE is on par w/ PP. Go for it.

If PP has been working well I'd stick with it. Visit the used oil analysis forum and see how well PP has been working for others, its a good oil no need to change. JMO

I didn't realize the OE is the old XL, either way it looks like a decent oil for a fair price. I'll be running it sometime in the next month or so.

I am using AMSOIL OE 5w30 planning on 6 months or 6,000 miles severe service will post a used oil analysis about July I have confidence my vehicle will do well with this oil.

Related to the op's question, I am also planning on using OE or XL in a couple new 2011 Hondas we just bought.

I noticed an above poster stated OE replaces XL, yet it still shows both on Amsoil's website.

Is the XL still being manufactured, or are they discontinuing it?

If they are both going to be available, which of the 2 is a better choice (I don't care about the cost). I will be following the maintenance minder. One of these cars does 95% over the highway and the other car does 95% in town.

I don't think xl is going anywhere, it looks like it has been reformulated and is a bit better than it was. The OE is essentially the old XL without the extended drain qualities of the new XL.

That's exactly correct. The current XL is a new stouter additive formulation. The old XL = OE. They both have the same base oils.
