Just put one of these on the Expedition. This engine has never had much in the way of cold start noise (I count my blessings on that compared to some modulars) but it does have a few seconds of "settle in" sound when it is first started in the morning, which then quickly diminishes as everything gets oil and it sounds "normal".

Now, in the past I had a Fleetguard with a bad ADBV that caused a LOT of start-up noise. Swapped for a Motorcraft, it went back to normal.

I've run:
Motorcraft FL-820S
Fleetguard Stratapore (glass media, rubber ADBV)
Purolator PureONE
Mobil 1 M-210

on this engine.

This filter, the EaO11 is the first filter I've EVER run that appears to have reduced the noise it makes on start-up even further. I can only assume it is the combination of a silicone ADBV and the free-flowing glass media. This likely means that the Royal Purple filter would perform in a similar fashion.

I found this impressive.

It's good to know. I've been wanting to try one of these along with the Motorcraft Racing version of the FL-820S. The Motorcraft Racing version is stated to have a lot more surface area and a better efficiency. I just seem to pile up the M1, Bosch D+, and Purolator on sale.

One of these days.....

OVERKILL,

Could it be the oil, not the filter?

Didn't this filter just go on with a fill of AZO 0W-30? Maybe the relatively higher additive levels of this oil are the cause of this?

Just a thought.......

I've run SO many different oils in this engine:

Mobil 1 0w20
Mobil 1 5w20
Delvac 1 5w40
Mobil 1 0w40
PC Duron-E 0w40
Redline 5w30
Mobil 1 0w30

NONE of those oils have had any effect on what the engine sounds like on start. They've changed the operational noise (the lighter oils were louder, heavier were quieter, best balance was the AFE 0w30, to which this current fill sounds about the same). So I'm having a hard time attributing it to the oil. I'm quite confident it is the increase in oil flow on start-up due to freer flowing glass media combined with a nice full filter thanks to the silicone ADBV.

I suppose for the purpose of duplicating or out of curiosity, find the Royal Purple equivalent and use another oil/mix/blend as before and see if the same 'uber' quietness is duplicated, then try it with EaO11 and same differing oil. etc

My Mazda6s takes the same filters as yr truck, and I've found no noticeable difference in start-up sound on my car. I like the K&N 2010 filter, with the small nut on top, but am currently using the M1-210 on my Mazda for my 1 yr.OCI. I've tried the Ea011 filter, and although it seems to be constructed well, and has a good filter rating, it just doesn't seem to justify the price.

Given that you don't have a Modular, I wouldn't expect you to have the same experience. I believe this is probably only applicable to the 5.4L/4.6L/6.8L.

The EaO is really no more expensive than the M1 or K&N filters up here. I haven't seen the Royal Purple ones around.

I can try it with the AFE 0w30, I still have an OCI left of it in stock. But I don't have access to the Royal Purple filters.

With a positive displacement oil pump, it's hard to believe one filter would give more flow at start-up over another ... unless the oil pump is going in to pressure relief at start-up engine speeds. I doubt that's happening unless the oil temp is way below zero.

I'd believe the sealing performance of the ADBV is the key difference between the filters used. Filters that seal well over extended engine off times provide less start-up noise.

Well, right on. I see in your picture from the other thread of you have another Amsoil filter? Just use it instead with the AFE after a couple intervals on AZO.

Could definitely do that.

They must have changed the EaO11 since I bought them. Mine were the loudest I used. Granted, I had only used Motorcraft beforehand, but still. It always made a RrrraT noise on startup with the EaOs.

My 5.4l stars the best with Mobil 1 0w30 and a FL820S racing filter. Have 270k plus on engine and it runs great. Doing 9k oci with good wear numbers.

Glad you added that last part, LOL, since the last few filters have ALL had silicone ADBV's

Hummm ... I'm not sure what the implied difference is supposed to be if they all have silicone ADBVs.

How well made/machined the parts are.

The EaO11 is made in Mexico, Donaldson has a couple of filter plants in Mexico, Amsoil licenses their "nanofiber" filter media from Donaldson, so I'm going to go out on a limb and assume yes. I honestly don't know for sure, but it all certainly adds up.

OVERK1LL, how are you liking the AZO/EaO11 overall? I just placed an order for AZO/EaO11 myself and should have it next week. This will be the first time in ~2 years the truck hasn't had Red Line in the sump.
