If you can't confirm that this person is really a Tribologist and that his statement are true, then why mention it?

Because it's what buster does. Nothing wrong with asking the question. But to claim some unknown internet guy says the oil fails some unnamed tests? Is that really what BITOG has come to? Wow. It's actually pretty ironic given the thread title.

FWIW,this forum has ALOT of bad info anymore on alot of different oil related questions / applications.

You have no answer. Don't take your frustration out on me. I'm just asking a question.

All forums have a lot of bad info. The internet in general does.

I'm an Amsoil user. Not a fanatic. I do have issues with availability and price, but I think they make some fine products.

I also understand they are proud of their products. And their method of distribution and price indicate that. Their oils are not available at Walmart because they see their products as top shelf and will not be subjected to Walmart low ball pricing.

And for the same reason I can't buy a pair of Danner boots at Walmart.

And I'd be willing to bet the commodity mindset of the API etc are again another example why they don't have their top shelf oils testEd by them.

If a product works and works well should it make a difference? Marketing is just that and will never be anything but. Maybe i am being shallow here, but i believe there is "proof in the pudding" so to speak. I use Amsoil products and like them very much not because of what i see in certs or numbers but because they perform very well. I use the OE line not because of the API certs but because i do not do long drains if i did i would certainly use SSO without issue. As has been stated here on this forum many times concerning base stocks it's not about group 3,4 or 5 it's about the total package. I know many and not all do i trust, but the Amsoil users i do trust have a long and healthy relationship with their products and there is my "proof in the pudding" to the extent i believe in their products and use them. I don't think the're hiding anything just not performing what they deem to be unnecessary. As they are a small corp as compared to XOM or Sopus, although their XL and OE lines are competition to your M1/PP synthetic products, they see no need to get into a retail shelf space war with them (at this time) as they would probably lose in big fashion. Small market, good product, make money, and be happy is enough for Amsoil at this point and probably forever, who know's.

There is no doubt they make some excellent products. They wouldn't be around today if they were of poor quality. I'm just interested in why they avoid the certification process ultimately, and what prevents some of the boutique oils from obtaining them. ASL/ATM/AZO are all at API SN level of ZDP. With RL it's clearly the ZDP levels. Royal Purple it was most likely ZDP and the 3x higher than allowed sulfur levels.
Based on the PQIA data, I'd say their SS line is mostly PAO/V based.

The entire issue suggests to me that while they may be the best oils for long drains you can buy, all the engine testing was probably not completed or certain tests they failed. That's all. And for many applications that may never matter.

Bottom line they have prompted me to look at other options. The G-Oil far is an excellent choice. I like the Pennzoil Ultra as well. I paid $11.87 for the shipping on my last case of Amsoil OE 5w30. Ouch

I understand the problems associated with your position. I am an Amsoil dealer therefore get their products at cost plus a small 1% shipping surcharge from a direct jobber within 10min of my house who keeps a LARGE inventory in his outdoor building so it's easy for me to obtain. Not everyone has that luxury.

And if a company says that their product "meets or exceeds" without any evidence, are we supposed to take them at their word ?

Amsoil should drop name-dropping standards, and just claim that they are the best, bar none, and fully guarantee any application that they recommend.

Simply go to the Amsoil website pick your oil of choice print the numbers. Flip to your favorite oils website find the comparable oil print the numbers. Compare the two and if Amsoils numbers are as good then they "meet" the API specs if they are better then they "exceed".

That should be visible undisputed evidence. No?

No because those specs don't tell you how well the oil did in all of those tests I listed above. You can get some indication of quality via spec sheets but not much.

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but what's with all the fuss over a niche product?

Most consumers just don't spring for these niche oils (Ams, RP, RL) because most of the time (and I do say most) they are car people who kinda have a clue what their car can handle and what they want their oil to do. That's why they choose these oil, and why they are so often loyal to them. And they can come here to BITOG to at least get the facts.

When the normal consumers wants a better oil, they just buy M1. Pretty simple.

Keep in mind this is not true for all cases, many of them....

Recently on another forum a retired sex therapist claimed that buster was molested by an Amsoil sales rep many years ago. I can't confirm this is true, but found it interesting.

So , what is buster hiding ? I'm guessing sexual attraction to Amsoil labeling, deeply repressed.

And don't blame me! I'm just asking the question!

See how that works ?

Amsoil is not a budget product. I fail to see why people keep missing....

This is what Napa synthetic, Quaker State Ultimate Durability, G-Oil, Peak Syn oils are for...

If in fact all the Amsoil products were API certified would anyone change and make a mass exodus to them? No! Especially at the price point they are at,and would be even more to pay for the certs costs involved. They are not interested in a pricing competition with the biggies. No one would be anymore inclined to use their top tier products than there is now. Amsoil has no need to go to the trouble IMO. You either know it is a good product and use it or you choose other options. It's all subjective to the individual user. We have choices and some choose differently and go outside the box that's all.

Pretty much....

It was not missed in the way you speak. Amsoil went to great lengths to pound Castrol and Mobil for using groupIII basestocks. We are a cut above,we use only the best IV/V basestock oils. Now Amsoil has joined in with the rest.
