Amsoil 0w-20 is in

Ok, bringing this thread back to life. Here's my driving environment:

1. Mostly city driving in Montreal, most trips are less then 5 - 10 miles.
2. I drive the crv agressively.. I don't beat on it, but I do get high on those 5000 - 5500 rpm vtec shifts a few times a week

3. We do about 1-2 long (300+ miles) trips per month to visit family in other cities.
4. I use regular 87 octane Shell gas, always. Never stray away from Shell, except when I have no choice on road trips.
5. I've used xlm for 6k oci's (since the first oil change) with EaO filter changed out every other oil change. Terry said the EaO works even better when loaded, if I recall correctly, hence my decision to leave the filter in, and because it's a pain to get out.
6. Remember, it's a 5 spd manual, and even highway driving at 110 - 120km/hour keeps a steady 3200-3500 rpm on the engine.

So, now that you have some history, how likely will asm hold up for 1 year / 15k miles? Or would two xlm changes per year be better, or would sticking with gtx/wix be ideal with 3+ changes per year?

If we didn't get -30 winter days, I wouldn't be thinking of syns as much as I do. GTX pour point is around -20.. so it'll turn to wax on those cold days...

so I'll probably run some sort of syn in there over the winter

Oh, and lastly, the great octane debate. Most honda owners say stick with 87 octane as per the manual. Does the 2.4 honda vtec/vtc (9:6 compression ratio) require/benefit from higher octane gas?

Now let's here the multitude of opinions on the subject

web, I run 89 and sometimes notice a small difference.

In your case, ASM is a good choice. The only reason I'm using it is bc I'm driving a lot so for me extended drains are a plus. If I wasn't, I'd use conventional. I usually have to add about 1/2qt per 5k miles. I shift usually around 3,500 - 4,000 + rpms and my car sees 100 miles a day at 80 mph.

Another more expensive alternative I've been thinking about is the RLI 0w-20. www.renewablelube.com Terry speaks highly of these guys.

Hi Buster,

I used to do 1 year oci's on my civic si with amsoil's 5w30 and it never burned a drop of oil over the full year.. I was rather impressed with the whole setup, and that was with the SDF line of filters. Not sure why I got more anal this time around with the maintenance intervals with the new crv. Must be an age thing

I suppose the best option is to try it and do a UOA on it after, let's say 10k miles, and see how it holds up. But the added cost compared to gtx/wix is substantial, especially if you throw in the UOA. I average about 15k miles per year, so I don't rack the mileage up like some.

oh, Buster, I see you're using amsoil's mtf. I've had 3 quarts sitting in my garage for a year now.. I keep hesitating to put it in... never did with my civic lol. You like it? Notice much difference?

web, I don't notice any difference with the Amsoil MTF. Maybe when it's really cold but it's really hard to say.

I have 2,700 miles on the 0w-20 already and at this point I no longer notice the differences I posted originally. This is either because I'm used to how the car is now with this oil or because the car simply had a fresh oil change and sometimes I think that is why we experience differences among oils. Just a thought.

Hey buster! Glad to see you running 0w20 Amsoil in your engine

.

I hit the 5,000 mile marker a few days ago on my 0w20 Amsoil in my GM 2.2L Ecotec.

I've been averaging about 1.5MPG better with Amsoil. The engine is definitely a lot quieter and loves to rev to the redline. I've been racing it a lot more and I swear it is faster (butt dyno).

The oil still looks brand new at almost 6,000 miles. I'm changing it out tonight (hey, at least I didn't do it at 3k) and will be sending in a UOA tomorrow.

Yes, I no longer notice anything special about my engine. However, I had GC 0w30 in before and there was A HUGE difference when downshifting as it wouldn't resist high rpms as much. There seemed to be a lot more lower end torque too.

Either way - If the UOA shows good, this is my oil I'll be using till the car dies.

Buster: How long you going to go till you get a UOA?

Hi OH, I'll probably sample around 8k miles for the first run. Cool, you're UOA will be the first one of the 0w-20.

Looking forward to you guys UAO's. I have my last 6qts of mobil1 0W-20 in right now. Looking forward to making the move myself to Ams 0W-20.

I'm surprised that many aren't trying Mobil 1 EP 5w-20. Has good specs.

I did . In my 01 Cougar ! It had 550 miles on it when I traded it in ...so it doesn't really count I'm guessing

I have used the s2000 0w-30 for some time and just switched to the new 0w-20 to give it a try. Car runs great and no burn off in over 1k miles. But, I do get the clack, clack, clack at start up now and did not with the 0w-30. Any ideas why the difference?
Using an Ea filter now with 0w-20, used Purolator P1 before????
Thanks,
Scott ( newbie here )

Could be the filter. I wouldn't worry about it. Give it some time. It's a great oil. Probably the best 20wt on the market IMHO. However, we'll need some data to make any conclusions.

4,900 miles on 0w-20 and I'm down about 1/4qt. If I can go 10k miles with only adding 1/2qt I'd be happy with that. If I'm at 1qt or over, time to go back to conventional.

Future cars will get broken in with more aggressive WOT/high load driving from the start. I really think this helps keep oil consumption down. Mine isn't that bad, but I'd like to see it down to zero. Only car of mine that didn't burn any oil was the Dodge Ram. I also broke that in according to the manual which was to WOT after 300 miles or so. Might have been the difference.

Seth I will definitely take a sample at some point just to see how the engine is doing. Whether I continue to use Synthetic will depend on oil consumption.

Almost 7,000 on the oil now. I've only used about .40qt if that. So by 10,000 miles, it will probably read 1/2qt low but I won't add any. If I decide to go further I will.

*When I take this sample the Amsoil EAO filter will have 22k miles on it. Should be interesting.

8,400 on oil

74,400 on OEM tires. LOL

74,400 on car.

NOW you are scaring me. I've never got more than 40K miles on any tires.

I'm coming up on 90k with the OEM tires. Still have plenty of tread left. (I do have to admit that I use snows in the winter for about 20k so I have only 70k on the OEMS)
