Amsoil 0w-20 is in

long time xlm user here. Thought I would never look at oil again after my marathon 500 hour obsession of figuring out the best oil for my crv last year on these forums. Now amsoil had to come out with a full pao 20 weight!!!

Since I'm heading out on a 4k trip to CO and back this summer I might just try it out for peace of mind. I don't plan on going longer then 6-8k oci's, so either oil would work fine. But if it 'feels' better then xlm, I just have to experience that for myself

Go for it. Of the 5 people on here that have switched over to the 0w-20, myself included, we have all noticed the same thing. How it performs in your engine could be different than mine, but so far I'm happy with it. A UOA will tell the true story. I would definitely recommend at least going 10k miles with it. No doubt it can handle that even in the worst conditions. The XL would be fine up to 6-7k miles. That too has shown very good results. Give us your honest feedback, even if you don't notice anything!

If you are referring to how thin the oil is, you can keep using your 50 weight oil. John Mihovitz uses 0w-20 in his 2000 horsepower 10,000rpm 4.6 DOHC motor and runs 6.5 at 217mph.

How about amsoil 0w30? How much different is it from 0w20?
 
Well, I am glad to see you took the plunge, Buster. As you know, you and I have the same Accord with about the same amount of miles. I am glad you noticed the responsiveness and smoothness that I have (glad it wasn’t in my head).

Anyway, just a little update. I live in Arkansas. The Accord is my wife’s car, and we took a two week trip down to Austin and San Antonio Texas in it. Well, I didn’t calculate per say, but I know how many miles I usually get out of the Accord…around 340, and that is 90% HWY and 10% city. We drive it a lot. Well, on the way to Texas I got 402 miles out of the tank before having to fill up…400 on the way back. While there, I noticed no issues at all with heat and the entire city driving that it normally doesn’t see.

Point? This Amsoil 0w-20 is flat out great in my application…better than any oil I have used on it since it was purchased new.

I have 1k miles on it. Long way to go. Haven't done a mpg test yet.
 
Amsoil7 how many MPG are you getting? That sounds like fantastic MPG for a V-6 and very good for a 4 cyl.
I don't know what size fuel tanks Accords have.

I am going up the West Coast here in the next week. This will be a good test for my fuel economy.
I normally get about 28 ish on the freeway. We will see how it does.......
 
I have an 04 accord v6. The fuel tank is rated at 17.5. About 14 gallons from full to low fuel light. I averaged the mileage over 7000 miles and got 29.2.

If you stuff an extra gallon or two in the tank and drive after the low fuel light comes on, 450 miles to a tank is easy. 542 is my best single tank mileage. The stars must have been aligned that day.
 
The 402 miles I got was before the gas light came on. That's when I pulled in and got gas. i don't know how much further i could have gone before the gas light came on, and even then you have a few gallons left.
 
I always fill my tank until the shutoff stops flow at my favorite gas station. If I want to estimate mileage, next time I fill-up, I divide mileage into gallons used.

All that other stuff about idiot lights is an inaccurate measurement of mileage. So is jumping from station-to-station when using the shutoff method. Some shutoffs are more sensitive than others. Some flow rates are different per station.
 
Put on over 700 miles since putting amsoil 0-20 and other fluids in my vehicle. Mileage has not changed over the MC 5-20 but it seems to be quieter and the trans now shifts really smooth with the amsoil synthetic fluid in it. Very pleased with the overall package so far.
 
Well I have had the Ams 0w-20 in my 06 Fusion 4cyl for just about 3000 miles. I have noticed quite a huge gain on this oil compared to fords recommended 5w-20 motorcraft oil. With straight highway driving for 7 hours I travelled a total 469 miles with only using 3 quarters of a tank, My fuel tank size is also only 17 gallons. Before I was lucky to get 438 miles on driving the tank to empty.
 
As much as I like the ASM, I thinkk a lot of us are seeing the increased mileage due to the change in fuel. I don't think it's the oil as much.

Im not sure that oil has to be PAO/POE to get a low Noack. XLT is pretty low too at 6.7%.

Makes me think the GIII in the XL must be pretty good stuff. I wasnt aware that Mobil made any GIII that good (Are they not the supplier for most Amsoil Basestock?). Maybe they are buying Shell XHVI for the XL line?
 
AMSOIL buys stocks from a number of different suppliers.
Most, if not all, PAO comes from ExxonMobil Chemical.
I don't think any of the GpIII comes from ExxonMobil--but I could be wrong. I suspect AMSOIL won't tell you, any more than CocaCola will give you their recipe.

PAO was what I meant by "most" of Amsoil's Basestock. I have no idea where the POE comes from. Given the Noack numbers of the XL it seems the volatility of the basestock would have to rival a PAO. Now who makes a GIII with that kind of low volatilty.... Shell and ......?

...and just in case you think I have completely forgotten the topic.... Buster, I wait with baited breath on your UOA as I have both a Hyundai 1.6L VVT, Ford 5.4L 24V, and maybe soon Toyota 1.8L that can benefit.
