Amazon vs Rock Auto

Rock Auto is way better than Amazon on prices and for WIX, nobody touches Rock Auto for that. My last order was 14 Wix oil filters, 2 Wix air filters and a repair manual. Arrived in a huge carton but still no refrigerator magnet. Hardly a dealbreaker but I like the magnets. Antifreeze is also much cheaper from Rock Auto. I am rarely in that much if a hurry. The Rock Auto atuff often arrives in 3 days sometimes 2. I have kind of switched from Amazon to Rock Auto for most parts. Exception is sometimes Amazon has a great price on genuine Toyota parts.

I am not bashing anyone. I bought from RA for the 1st time because I wanted to give them a try. I was happy to see the prices and selection.
I bought what I needed; the $4 Fram Air Filter was really cheap!
I knew shipping would be costly; on balance total cost was almost a wash.

The difference was delivery time, and approx. 10 days vs 2 days is a lot.
For you computer scientist analysts out there, Amazon pricing is set by some very complex algorithms running against TONS of data.
RA does much of the same, I'm sure.

As far as shopping around, that's what I was doing.
All in, I do not have much time to shop around.
I work more than full time and care for my 94 year old father every day. And more...
Time is not something I have much of.

I'm in the same boat. I feel your pain.
Good luck!

I've bought wiper blades, wheel bearings, brake caliper rebuild kits, oil filters, intake gaskets, etc. etc. from Rockauto
RA was the only place I could find those for a reasonable price.

Me too. I have been the primary caretaker for sick and dying parents since 2009. I still have 5 gallons of Chevron Supreme in the garage I bought from Amazon. With parents 70 miles away and an oil burning car it was very easy to purchase. Fortunately, the nursing home does most supports these days and my current car does not use oil. Take care!

I use both, and recently have again. I was looking for coil boots for my Envoy, and the Densos were selling for $12.97 on RockAuto but I found a set for $5.99 shipped on Amazon with Prime. On the other hand, Bosch Double Iridium spark plugs were $8.99 a pop on Amazon with free shipping through Prime, but I got them for $5.24 a pop plus $2.99 shipping, which worked out to $34.43 vs. $53.94 on Amazon.

While RockAuto is often cheaper, it pays to shop around.

Generally I use Amazon (parts) and Walmart (oil).
Simple stuff; Denso Air and Wix Oil filters for 2006 TSX.
Fram Air (like $3) for 1998 Accord.
Great prices! But the shipping kinda balances out Amazon.

Shipping is Nov 15 and 17. Amazon is 2 days! Sheesh!
Not sure I will use them again.

Your thoughts?

I have purchased my share of parts from RockAuto . On oil filters , 6 to 12 at a time to spread out the freight cost .

I am an Advance Speed Perks Member & receive emails with discounts on a regular basis . I compare the discounted price against the RockAuto price + freight .

Not sure if I have ever purchased auto parts from Amazon ?

If you need it quicker , factor that in to your choice . RockAuto , if I order it one weekend , I normally receive the order by the next weekend , to work on the vehicle .

Me too. I always pick the cheapest shipping option and it usually takes 3 days max

RA is always cheaper when I compare it to anywhere else. Especially if you can find parts that ship from the same warehouse.

I am very encouraged by the posters who received their orders in 3 days; that's huge!
I live in Los Gatos, CA (Silicon Valley); I will report back on actual receive date.
Of course I would love to see 3 days, but if I do, RA is doing a horrible job of estimating delivery times.
If the time is significantly shorter, I believe RA would improve sales by more accurately relaying that information.

All good and thanks to all for posting.

Lately for a lot of parts I've been seeing a DHL option for not a lot of money, and that is next-day-air. It must be warehouse dependent but when it is available that is a decent deal.

I shop around and buy wherever is cheaper. I have no loyalty to either company, and I've bought many things from both of them. When I had to replace the exhaust on my CR-V, I bought the pipes from Rockauto, and one of the o2 sensors. Amazon had the other o2 sensor a few dollars cheaper, so I bought the other sensor there.

The strategy for buying from Rockauto is to purchase items that will ship from the same warehouse. So, you may need to purchase a different brand than originally planned. The goal is to have the shipping field show "1-2 days" or "2-3 days." If it says anything longer, you need to re-evaluate what is in your cart.

If you need it now, go to a regular store

Otherwise, Rock Auto is usually cheaper even with no free shipping.

For my G35X, Amazon's brake pads and especially rotors is quite a bit less than RockAuto's. When I bought pads and rotors for my wife's Fusion - an extremely common car - I encountered the same. On rotors, Amazon's price was much higher too but they were cheaper for the pads. I actually did the math between different options, including the shipping charges, and RockAuto was lower.

Meant to say:

"For my G35X, Amazon's selection of brake pads and especially rotors is quite a bit less..."
