The LR3 needs a new alternator...I can get a Denso reman from Rock auto for about $130 with shipping after the core. Anyone have good luck with local brands (Napa, AZ, etc)?

i would go with power master 10 years ago i bought a new one from napa went threw four in two days before i got one that worked

If you can change it out yourself with little trouble, go with a "lifetime" warranty, lowest price alternator. If not I have had only one experience with a Denso alternator and it was excellent

I would go with the Remy reman from Rock, at least they use new bearings not repack the old ones like Denso, its cheaper with the same 12mo warranty. For 118 bucks you cant go wrong.

Bearing 100% tested to OEM specifications and repacked with OEM grade lubricant.

I generally use local lifetime ones unless there is a large price difference. Advance plus coupon usually wins but I also check AZ just in case.

I had two Denso fuel pumps fail on me in under a year. Hopefully they are better with alternators.

They are not rewound, commutator turned not replaced, only defective parts replaced and don't use new bearings so what makes them better?
I see all the +1 and X2 comments but I have a feeling its just brand recognition because there is nothing high quality about the rebuilding process that I can see that sets them apart from any other brand name.

Believe it or not but I've had good luck with a couple of ProStart remanufactured alternators from Pep Boyz.

One has been on my Jeep now for a little over 18 months/20000 miles without any problem. Back in the 90s I had one on another car for 9 trouble free years when I got rid of the car.

I was told that the PepBoys house brand (ProStart, ProStop etc) is being phased out now that Ichan took over.

If you ask ten people whose cheap part store alternator is better (O'reilly, Advanced, Napa, Autozone) you will get 10 different answers. They all use cheap Mexican refurbs, it doesn't matter which part store chain you bought it from. You have X out of 10 chance of it failing-- some will have Autozone failures, some Napa, some others, but they come from the same place. You can either buy the value-line at the chain stores with little or no warranty and roll the dice, or the more expensive premium-line at whatever chain store-- you get basically the same reman with a longer warranty. Or you can buy a Denso, Delco, whatever name brand reman (or even new) if you have the cash, but that gives you extra piece of mind that you're getting a decent product. If all else fails, go buy a junkyard unit and your're probably better off than buying a chain store reman alternator, as at least the OEM junkyard unit isn't using cheap Chinese/Mexican aftermarket diodes, brushes, etc, whatever they used to rebuild it...

I'm wondering what kind of rock you hide under and that you cant google LR3 but can post about it on bitog? Hint if you type LR3 into google any one of the first 15 links is good.

back on topic

They can all be junk if its easy to change go local whatever. If its hard to change... pay someone maybe.

I would lean this same way-- if it's a bear to replace, it might be worth the money to get a decent name-brand reman, or even a newer used one off Ebay or a salvage place.

If it's easy to replace, no reason not to roll the dice on whatever parts store reman is cheapest that has the warranty you want. Think of how long you're going to own the vehicle and decide from there. I've personally never had a reman alternator fail on me (even the really cheap ones with little warranty), but I know lots of people that have.

Some 13 years ago I got an alternator from Kragen, with lifetime warranty.

I beat them up pretty good charging depleted batteries and can swap one out in 15 minutes in the parking lot.

I'm on about my 5th perhaps 6th reman, and each box Kragen, and now Oreilley's, hands me has been from a different rebuilder.

Latest reman is from Wilson. Seems to be able to produce more juice at hot idle than the previous one, Whose stator I believe overheated after about 7 solid years of abuse.

I'd like to rebuild one myself one day. Get some really beefy Diodes, add more heatsinking, top quality bearings.
