Allison pulling branding rights for the GM 10L1000

The software "fix" is a reprogram that sends the transmission into limp mode if it detects multiple ratios applied at once - IE lockup occurring. That's not a fix.

Allison/GM should have continued development of the Allison 9 speed. If they can't get the 10L1000 fixed, the Ram ZF is going to have their share of the market.
Nate at Next Gen claims he approached GM with his actual, mechanical fix and GM told him to pound sand AND released a bulletin stating there is no mechanical fix while some dealers were installing his parts to fix the problem.

Gee, cognitive dissonance much? ;)

If I were in the market for a new 3/4 ton pickup it would be a Ram with a Cummins and ZF 8 speed.
I don’t know how anyone shopping for a new truck wouldn’t be aware of all the well publicized GM transmission issues.

A 6 speed automatic behind a Diesel in a pickup truck is enough.

This is an excellent point. With the powerband and torque curve of diesels you don't need a ton of gears.

Honestly I'm thrilled with the 6R140 behind my 6.2 gasser, and I tow in CO where I'm gonna need gears more than almost anywhere else in the world. I've never wished for more ratios.

Ha ha ha, GM has absolutely nothing to complain about when it comes to Allison. It is so well deserved, GM sold off the most profitable part of GM there was oh and actually sold off one other great part as well.
They sold off Detroit Diesel Allison years and years ago, so yeah GM (Goofy Monkeys) go pound rocks. What else can you monkeys mess up? Oh yeah sell off one of the most popular of all the Electromotive Division, you know they make locomotives, and very dependable and popular engines that are used world wide. So the Goofy Monkeys seem to do best at ruining the company.

Yeah you gotta wonder how GM did so good financially back in the 50's and 60's when new cars and trucks could be had for under $2000.
And now with prices through the roof, they cann't design anything that doesn't have some huge problem with it.

Its part of their long time pivot to go from a company that builds things to a company that assembles things other people make. Think economy of scale if they buy widgets from a widget company that makes them for several other companies they can likely get them cheaper. Look what they did with AC Delco, Saginaw steering gear and Delphi.

They want a fix, not a fix that costs money. That might eat into Marys next 20 million dollar year. Remember all the hype after the ignition debacle where they kicked the can down the road until the death lawsuits started piling up. We were told it was a new day and that problems would be dealt with head on. I didnt believe it then and I dont believe it now.

In my 2006 duramax, I was pretty happy with six, but the gap between 4th and 5th was kinda big for towing heavy. There were lots of rolling highways where (55 mph) where 4th was busy and 5th was a bit tall.

In my 2014 ram, six is not "enough" when towing heavy mainly because of the 68rfe being a confused, slow shifting mess of a transmission that can't manage to get to lockup when you want it to. Unlike the Allison 1000, the 68rfe has even spaced gears from 4-5-6.

Six can be enough or it can be complete garbage. The Allison 1000 was the best light duty diesel pickup transmission sold in the past 23 years, and can be affordably built/rebuilt to pretty high standards. The ZF is now poised to be the next respectable transmission in that space if Ram can build a half decent transmission around it.

If the aftermarket figures out a ZF retrofit for my truck it will be tempting.

According to a few articles for the 2500/3500 that's true but the 4500,5500,and 6500 use an actual Allison manufactured transmission.

Correct....The medium duty truck still use the Allison 1000 6 speed....But GM retained the rights to manufacture the 1000 6 speed in the sale of Allison, But I don't think they do anymore since shutting down the Baltimore transmission plant.

Given Allison's relationship to GM in general - sounds like more than a single transmission / name licensing issue. Could be commercial / technical / financial or someone hurt someone's feelings?

Soap opera. Does anyone really buy a truck because it has a little Allison label on the fender?

Because the limp mode flash is a much cheaper remedy and solves the safety concern. Then, GM only has to replace a small percentage of transmissions, those that fail, vs proactively addressing every truck that is under warranty with a valve body fix.

GM dealer techs are not qualified to implement any sort of valve body fix anyway. R&R the entire transmission is the extent of their technical abilities.

Like Nate, Dustin Mintern is also poised to make bank on the 10 speed. He has supposedly offloaded all his 6 speed work to his brother.

My father's 2022 got the flash. He has had no limp incidents yet but has mentioned a valve body once beyond warranty.

about time. i drove one of our 2025 2509hd 6.6L L8T-10L1000 combos and i hate it. the L8T works perfectly with the 6L90. the 10 speed revs the engine higher consistency versus the 6L90.

One of my uncles did several years ago, and then about six months in he discovered the sticker was incorrect and it had the regular production transmission. IIRC he forced them to buy the truck back but he’s gone now so I can’t verify that.

Maybe both parties were doing the same …
Nobody on this sight will ever know - but it’s another opportunity to bash GM - regardless of the dozens of problems many makes are having …

I agree....Both parties saw it as beneficial at first.

I'm pretty GM loyal vehicle wise & spend more in GM parts departments than most spend on vehicles......Feel I have grounds to bash them based on recent behavior.....

**8L90 was a POS that GM never fixed, A lot of damming information came out in the class action suit.

**L87 fiasco that they were going to sweep under the rug 'til the NHTSA investigation

I've contacted GM directly about '14 & up 6L80/6L90 pressure regulator valve wear & still using the same inferior valve in service parts.

The 10L1000 is the only unit GM brands an Allison that wasn't engineered by Allison. The 6 speed Allison 1000 is a true HD Allison unit.

I wish the Allison1000 6 speed and 6L90 were the base line offerings and the 10 speeds optional.
I’m sure offering optional final gear ratios is asking too much.
