U.S. officials fear a huge attack this summer. Al Queda has apparently 18,000 members ready to attack. I'm sure they want to influence the election if possible and kill as many Americans as possible. This country better get it's act together real quick and secure the continental US as safely and quickly as possible.

I don't see how al Qaeda figures they will help themselves very much by attacking the USA before the elections. I would assume that given the choice al Qaeda would want Kerry to be the US president rather then Bush. If an attack does take place Bush will probably get re-elected.

Sure hatred in Iraq has grown since we marched into that God forsaken land. Regardless of how OUR press sells it to the world we have done some good there. But to say Al Queda has grown purely because of this, is wrong and pure speculation. How do all the people with perfect future and past vision not know that, for example, Saddam wasn't thinking of conscripting/hiring 50,000 more terrorists and then become buds with Bin laden???...We don't know, and that's the point!

Chris B., neither of the two major political parties in this country will close the borders. In my opinion, this in insane. Millions of people are pouring into this country and we know very little about a lot of them. Soviet spies used to WALK from Canada into the USA and to this very day a person in some areas could still do this. al Qaeda terrorists could easily be among the millions pouring in from Mexico. In fact, I saw a special on TV where a guy said that people from the Middle East are paying 50,000 per head to cross from Mexico into the USA.

But think of the political consequences if terrorists strike in the USA (especially if they use nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons) and later it is discovered these terrorists crossed over to the USA from Canada or Mexico? Another thing we must do is get tougher with Israel. The US is virtually a rubber stamp vote in the UN for anything that Israel does. This

Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda were responsible for 9/11. They were in Afghanistan. We invaded Afghanistan in order to destroy Al Queda and capture Osama Bin Laden. We diverted military and intelligence resources from Afghanistan in order to invade Iraq. In spite of convincing quite a few in the US otherwise, Bush, Powell, Rumsfield, etc. have all had to state that there is no link between Iraq and 9/11. Saddam's Iraq was not a big training camp or haven for Al Queda, as he didn't like Muslim fundamentalists terrorists either since Iraq was secular state.

So the Attorney General says that Al-Qaeda wants to "hit the United States hard." Yet there's no specific information about time or place, and there are no recommendations for actions or precautions for citizens to make?
What exactly is the goal of this press conference? I mean, other than to bolster the President's historically low approval ratings.

Gee why wouldn't they want to effect the election since it worked with the wimp Spaniards. When they first bombed WTC we did nothing, when they bombed the Federal Building in Oklahoma City we didn't pursue the Mid East Iraqi connection. John Doe 2 was Hussein EL Hussannie a member of the Iraqi republican guard. Went to work at Logan Airport in Boston until 09/11/2001. McVey had a pocket full of Iraqi phone numbers when he was picked up. There was a APB put out for a Brown pick-up with three mid eastern men. 12 hours later the FBI was told to kill that APB by the Whitehouse. We did nothing to the home country that financed it because Clinton didn't want to get involved. When the Cole was attacked the Government said it wasn't a bad enough incident to start something over. After 18 U.S. soldiers were killed in Somalia the Administration ran like a bunch a scared school girls. When flight 800 was shot down over New York harbor we got a nice CIA fantasy video of a center fuel tank exploding. Even though several hundred people saw the missiles tail flame come off the water and rise into the night sky ending in the explosion of the aircraft.

It takes years for Al Qaeda to plan and execute an attack. What was it.....eight years for a second attack on the WTC? And we had useless Clinton in the White House most of that time. Why are they ready so soon now???

Even the State Department has noted that Spain voted out the previous government not because of the bombing, but because the previous government tried to use the bombing to implicate the other party in the upcoming election. Something like 90% of the people didn't support sending troops to Iraq in the first place, so they recalled their troops when the new government came into power.
Yup, recruitment is up due to scattering Al Queda from it's base in Afghanistan, and from the invasion of Iraq. The article didn't state so, but I gather that the situation would have been better if Al Queda had been contained in Afghanistan and if Iraq had not been invaded.
