I have a '96 S6 2.2 Avant with a little over 100,000 miles on it. No major problems so far.
Oil, oil filter, air filter changed every 5000 miles (or before), always synthetic VW502.00.
So far (most of this I consider normal maintainance items on an old car):
Timing belt and water pump, 4 x shocks, brake rotors (front and rear), brake pads (front and rear), parking brake cable, 2 x control arm rear, 2 x tie rod end at 75,000 miles.
CV-boots front, ignition trouble (changed wires, plug boots and one coil), turbo hose leaks (2 hoses changed), valve cover gasket at 90,000 miles.
I also change all fluids every 2 years (brake, hydraulic, coolant).
Drive: It's a big, heavy car. Stock handling and comfort is ok, it's a compromise. A lot of owners change to lowered suspension (H&R, Eibach + Koni or Bilstein) to make handling better.
